SQ Starts Summer Only Service

Sun Jun 30, 2002 7:58 pm

Saturday 6 July 2002:

Today SQ starts a 'summer only' (July & August) day-light B777-200 service from SIN dep. 14.00 to AMS arr. 21.15. = The eighth non-stop SQ frequency on this route.

Return flight dep. AMS on Saturday evening 22.35 - arr. SUN 17.40 at Changi.

Question: Does SQ operate more short term 'high season' schedules?

Well I haven't seen this before. I think SIA is starting a higher peak season thing. Someone also mentioned on this forum that SQ016 to SFO from SIN, normally a A343, has been turned into a Megatop.

The reservations system show that SQ is fully booked in Y-class on most Europe-SIN flights this summer. As are the EU carriers. Capacity short fall??

I hope not. Would be a disaster. I think SIA needs to lease some SALE 777s if that's so!  Laugh out loud

Don't forget that SQ lost enourmous amount of capacity on the AMS-SIN route once they started the flights to ORD with the B777 last year. Just as with the EWR-AMS-SIN flight the capacity on the AMS-SIN leg is limited. As the holidays have just started here in The Netherlands it's no suprise that some airlines can need some additional capacity (allthough I doubt that the yield is very high).

BTW not only SQ is fully booked. KLM, Garuda, Malaysia seems to be doing pretty well aswell ex AMS

European flights via the traditional Kangaroo route to anywhere in Europe at this time of year are always heavy, but are heavier than normal this year. You've got the Commonwealth Games starting in England later this month, there is a pent up demand from many people that deferred travel plans after 11/9 (or 9/11 for our Nth American friends!) who are only now prepared to travel and stragglers and travellers who have moved from the World Cup to see other parts of the far east and asia before going home. Just the Commonwealth Games by itself in the "Mother country" will see many thousands of Aussies and Kiwis taking the trip north.
Cheers/Regards. Al.

It's not unusual to see extra capacity to Europe in the summer, or to anywhere else during peak periods for that matter. SQ ran an additional 1x weekly SIN-VIE-AMS in Summer 97, if I remember correctly, and in Summer 98 a lot of SIN-FCO services were upgraded from 343 to 744.

LJ was spot on when he talked about the loss of capacity following the start of two-class 3x weekly 772ER services to AMS. All in all that was a probably a positive move for SQ, though, given AMS' notoriously low yields and lack of premium traffic.

Actually SIA was right in deploying the B777-212/ER to AMS as there is hardly any premium traffic. On my flight to FCO I also noticed most of the passengers in J class were dressed in smart casual attire.

Perhaps due to the arrival of 9V-SVH, SIA can launch the flight due to additional capacity. I won't be suprised if 9V-SVH is seen doing that route.

9V-SVA,
Any ER can do that route, and its not limited to 9V-SVH.

I know that Tsentsan, but I said that due to extra capacity with SVH coming in, I won't be surprised to see SVH doing that route!

Think SVH might be in the hangar. Saw it being towed there a day after it was delivered.

Pardon my ignorance. But can you ascertain premium traffic by the way J class passengers dress?

Cheers

No. But since they were dressed in that manner, I suppose they decided to splurge or get bumped up with mileage.

I see.... and I would assume that those who pay premium fares would actually go on the flight in their tuxedoes? Wonder what non-revs wear then?  Wink/being sarcastic

I dont want to get into the business class fashion discussion......but SQ and other carriers offer reasonable upgrade prices out of AMS, BRU, etc to the Far East and Australia. The supplement is something like Euro 2000.00 return, still a lot of money, but far less than a full fare business class ticket.

Higher-budget vacation travellers frequently take advantage of these offers, thus smart-casual clothing instead of shirts and ties? Who knows, I fly up front often and never dress for the occassion.

You guys might want to know 9V-SVH (the newest 772ER) is in the hangar getting fitted with Spacebeds now. So is 9V-SRL.

So the entire fleet of 777s is eventually going to get the Spacebeds since SRL is getting it? Or is this only limited to the SR and SV machines?

I am curious too. I thought only the long haul fleet (744, 772ER) would get the Spacebeds.

Not too sure about SRL, but SVH is confirmed in the hangar with spacebeds.
Saw SRL today baking in the hot sun, just outside Cargo.
