LH To Be Officially The World's Favourite Airline

Sun Jun 30, 2002 8:45 pm

Finally, Lufthansa is gaining the respect to officially be "The World's Favourite Airline".

The German national airline is to transport 32 000 000 passengers internationally compared to British Airways' 31 000 000 passengers. While AMR, DAL, UAL and ANA fly up to 100 000 000 passengers a year, most are domestic.

British Airways was allowed to call itself "The World's Favourite Airline" because it flew the most passengers internationally, despite Lufthansa disproving the way BA uses it's figures to justify it's slogan in 1999 - 2000.

Marie Oldham, a managing partner at Media Planning, said BA's 'fall from grace' reflects the UK's diminishing influence in both €urope and the Global stage. (I don't think so).

"BA bottled out of expansion and of the low-cost airline battle until it was too late and Britain as a nation has bottled out on the single currency," she said. "When the world thinks of Europe now it thinks of Germany and France as the leaders, not Britain, and that is mirrored by our national airline."

"It is the final confirmation that we are no longer a great power in the world - another nail in the coffin of Cool Britannia."

Maybe Babaero, but I think their figures will officially be proved wrong. They will no doubt be a favourite airline with some people though.

Sour grapes from Lufthansa. They shouldn't have contested in the first place. BA will always be the world's favourite airline in the public's mind.

That's an interesting post, Singapore_Air, because it says that Lufthansa is gaining the "respect " to be the world's favourite airline - yet the claim (by them, I gather) sems to be based, reasonably enough, purely on numbers.
I wonder whether the slogan is copyright? I guess it is - and will continue to be.. and I assume you can still call yourself "The World's Favourite Airline" even if you're not "The World's Most Travelled Airline", as "favourite" seems to imply some sort of qualitative, rather than necessarily quantative opinion??
And, I agree with you, the media saying "..we are no longer a great power in the world.." and that it is a reflection of Britain's diminishing influence, largely because another European carrier happens to carry a slightly larger number of passengers is stretching things more than a tad, and simply reinforces my jaundiced view of media credibility.
Not that it matters, of course, other than to airline spin doctors desperately seeking a few extra inches in a media all too eager to print anything that can fill the journalist's quota for the day. Ho hum.
Realistically, it probably has nothing at all to do with passenger perception of service standards or reliability, and probably just as little to do with national influence. Both airlines are regularly seen as among the world's top half-dozen or so carriers.
ONLY 31 million passengers? Oh my gosh!
Cheers

The article didn't say respect, but I put it there because it seems that before, when LH announced that they used BA's accounting (it's not but it's the only word I can think of at the moment) practices to justify them being "The World's Favourite Airline" for them (LH) to then claim that title from BA. Previously, it was just yeah yeah liar.

As for the word "favourite", I think that should go to the airline in the world that has won the most awards.

What a load of.......!! Yeah, whatever Lufthansa! As for the comments about the UK....where the hell do they get that from!! So for once LH carries 1 million more passengers internationally than BA and suddenly it is the nail in the coffin of the entire UK? hahahahahahahahahaha...gotta love marketing logic (or is that a contradiction in terms). In typical Euro fashion, they think numbers, hard facts and paper figures....to the rest of us, "Favourite" means more emotionally. So yes LH you carried more passengers (woo-hoo) but you dont have the same emotional support and never will  Smile

British Airways. The World's Favourite Airline.  Smile

Britair: Your comment and logic are admirable, however, LH are basing their justification the same way BA have/did - using figures, "in typical Euro fashion".

Lufthansa in my opinion is better than BA. When I think of BA, I think of a bunch of snobs for some reason, don't get mad at me, that's what I think. I never really likeed BA or Virgin, I think LH should be the World's Favorite Airline. Just because BA has that damn slogan, doesn't mean they are. What if America West's slogan was "America's Best Airline" WOULD THAT BE TRUE!?

I don't understand this discussion!
BA or LH? No doubt LH is better. LH is in Star FRA as continetal hub is better than LHR. The service really improved the last years and I don't think that PTV or not is nothing to value an Airline.

This is discussion is about LH being petty (and unoriginal) enough to be concerned with BA's well-established advertising tactics. I don't know if LH realises this, but BA is always going to be the World's Favourite Airline in the eyes of the public.

Most of the guys from the UK support BA as most of the germans here support LH!

But didn't call BA themselves "world's favourite Airline"?

Some people here should take easier about the issue.

You know that everyone has a different opinion about the world's favourite airline in their mind.

Sure, some people may think British Airways is much better than Lufthansa, but there are also many people reckon Lufthansa is greater than British Airways.

So, let's forget it and be friendly to each other.

>>What if America West's slogan was "America's Best Airline" WOULD THAT BE TRUE!?<<

I'd agree with it if you changed that to "America's Best Major Airline". They offer frills, such as meals on long flights, elite program(good one too), clubs, advanced seat assignments, first class, damn good IFE selection, but don't charge last-minute travelers through the nose.

BTW: I thought CO was good until they took away the 20,000 off-peak mileage award, cancelled their agreements with their 2 airlines that could fly a person to many places within the Western US(Alaska can really only reach the Pacific NW), Bethune's arrogant statements, no more free drinks internationally(I don't care but it is a stupid idea), raising P-club prices after losing several AmWest had, installing kiosks that will replace the gate agent eventually, and giving international elites the HoKeY fares.

Who actually "allows" an airline to call itself "world's favourite"? I assumed that BA owned that slogan, as they have used it for decades.

Lufthansa is not as service-oriented as BA, everyone knows that. BA has a much better public image than LH. LH is a reliable, but robotic airline. BA is the world's favorite airline!

Is it just me, or are most of the people saying "this is a load of...." and all that other stuff British? I have many British friends that would hate to admit that something German (i.e Cars, Airlines, Economy) is better than something British. So, now, who is the one being biased? I would fly LH over BA anyday, If BA originally based thier title on pax numbers, than LH deserves it.

I'm not British nor am I german and BA is much better. That's how the majority of the people feel. BA offers a premium product, even in economy, whereas LH offers a reliable and very standard service. There's a big difference.

Isn't that slogan copyrighted? As such its just advertising then. There is no jurisdictional board adjudicating as to which airline has the right to that title. In any case, the service standards on BA are so much superior to Lufthansa in all classes. So whats the big deal?

I don't mean to be downbeat, but I do not see how emotions or service-orientation or product and amenities come into this subject.

BA calculated and justified, quite rightly it seems, that it was the world's favourite airline. Now this was calculated on the amount of international passengers is carried around the world.

Now when another airline, Lufthansa or whatever it could be, comes along and shows that the number of international passengers the airline carries exceeds BA, therefore, BA's slogan and justification for using the slogan seems to go out the window a little.

Of course, one could always say that I think BA is the world's favourite airline, however, I think the logic that the person saying that is different from both BA's and LH's.

Perfectly understandable reactions.

I think everyone here has missed an important point;
British Airways no longer use The World's Favourite Airline as their marketing slogan. It was dropped about 2 years ago, in favour of 21st Century Air Travel. So this whole discussion is something of a moot point.

British Airways were never under any obligation to prove they were in fact the world's favourite airline, just like Coca Cola never had to prove that you just can't beat the feeling, P&O Cruises don't have to prove that life doesn't get much better than this, and American Airlines were never under any obligation to prove that they were in fact something special in the air.

It's a marketing slogan, not a factual claim!

Racko's right, I bet there's millions out there and probably a lot of Brits that think that BA isn't the World's Best Airline. I know it's a slogan, but I hope people don't take it in seriously to think that there is factual statistics backing up the slogan!

I am not convinceed that just because LH carried so many passengers that it is the "world's Favorite Airline". That does not speak of people's attitude. Some HAVE to fly LH. I fly it often becasue it is part of Star Alliance. They are good, no doubt about it, but I would PREFER BA to LH. I would prefer SQ to all of them. There is NO compariosn between LH in F and C with the GRAT F and C in BA!! Have you flown the two in those classes? Try it and you will see the difference.

I remember a few years back when Virgin were winning lots of awards for excellence in service and Richard Branson said BA was falsely advertising itself as the World's Favourite Airline. BA responded by saying that their justification was the total number of passengers that travelled with BA, not the level of service. RB responded by saying that in that case, the M25 could be classified as the World's Favourite Motorway!

Maybe it's a culture thing, but when I think 'favourite', I think of quality and level of service. And in my opinion, BA wins hands down over LH.

Yeah, but flying within the EU is pretty comparable to US domestic flights. Let's face it, the largest carriers are in the US.

In the U.S., if you were to ask a bunch of common, non-travelled average Joes on the street what "Lufthansa" is, I betcha the majority would be like, "a what?" Or try asking them what the national airline of Germany is, and they'd probably respond with something stupid like, "uhhh, Air Germany?" On the other hand, if you were to ask them if they've ever heard of "British Airways", I bet almost they'd quickly say "yes."

BA has advertised heavily in U.S. major cities and on network TV for many years. It is thus a household name, even amongst the commercial aviation ignorants (the majority of people).

I can't recall a media advertisement for Lufthansa, much less a slogan. LH just isn't as widely recognized by everybody as British Airways. At least here, in the 50 states.

OK, so British Airways isnt the World's Favourite Airline huh? Well...in that case.......

Is EasyJet proven to be the Web's Favourite Airline, no, well they better stop using that line then. Is Ryanair, The Low Cost Airline, hmmm, well theyre not the only low cost airline, so they better stop using that......Delta, does everyone there really Love to Fly and do they always Show it, hmmm, what happens when it doesnt show? They better stop using that line. American, so you're the American State at 35000 feet, hmmm, what happens when you fly at 30000 feet, what state are you in then? Get rid of it! United, well you were the Friendly Skies, and then you were Rising, what happens on cloudy days or during descent? Nup, cant claim either of those things....they gotta go, sorry. KLM, so youre the Reliable Airline, huh? So you have the best ontime record in the world? no? Well, you guessed it, you cant use that line then!

......Anyways, you get the point  Smile Marketing slogan's are just that. Pure marketing. The are there to stir emotions and aid brand recognition - they're not there to be taken literally.

Cheers  Smile

p.s. I know some of the above mentioned slogans are a bit out of date, but I was trying to prove a point, so please dont post a million things like "thats not their slogan anymore"  Smile Thanks  Smile

What a load of crap. I agree with Brons2. Frankly flying intra-Europe is NOT flying internationally. The US has been told this time and time again by the UK (and the rest of Europe) when talking about fifth freedom rights, etc. Europe claims to be ONE market (much like the US). This is why Europe doesn't want a US airline to be able to fly between, for instance, London and Paris, even though the flight is between 2 different countries. They say it is like flying between New York and Chicago.

But NOW, when it comes to counting "international" passengers, I'm sure many intra-Europe passengers were used in those figures! Face it: American Airlines should be the "world's favo(u)rite airline" based on passenger figures. Because even though most are domestic, it is no different from carrying a passenger from Frankfurt to Milan.

I wonder what the world's favourite airline would be without counting intra-Europe passengers as "international"?

I too think this is silly.

It's a slogan. It's not an attack on your country.

If you want to be technical, neither BA nor LH are the world's favorite airline. Neither one is my favorite airline, and I'm quite sure that there are millions of other people who would agree with me.

I like the slogan, but I don't take it literally. I also don't think Pepsi has any joy, I don't think American is truly something special, and I don't need Southwest to be free to move about my country.

They are all great slogans, but that's all.

Also, just so I don't get attacked, I do like both BA and LH, and I do think they are great airlines.

RE: LH To Be Officially The World's Favourite Airline

LISTEN.

STOP ARGUING. Everyone here knows that British Airways is not the World's Favorite Airline. Neither is Lufthansa. The World's Favourite Airline has to be Garuda Indonesia!. Excellent service. Modern aircraft and Friendly Staff.

Some one earlier on said that BA no longer use the "World's favourite airline" slogan. They are correct. It was replaced (in the UK anyway) when the new business class seats came in. It is now "21st Century Air travel"
