Rumors: UA To Reinstate HKG-LAX Within A Year

Mon Jul 01, 2002 1:30 am

According to a UA staff, UAL plans to reinstate service between HKG and LAX (UA 001/002) within a year.

They have already reinstated service between HKG and SIN.

However, it will probably be a B 777-200ER. At least for a start......

Great news, I hope this is an indication of a healthier UA and airline industry.

Some people even said that they were to ground half of their B 747-400s in the past. But at the end, they didn't.

Good news indeed.......  Smile I hope UA 001/002 will be reinstated ASAP.

actually you'll see it around april of next year and it will be a 747-400.

You'll also see:

BOS-LHR upgraded to a 777
BOS-NRT w/ 777
SEA-LHR possibly brought back w/ a 777

Yes they are........

Does UA still fly from LAX to SYD? If not, will they reinstate this route anytime soon?

Where the heck are you rascals getting all of these rumors about supposed new flights? I would love to see all of these coming true, but some of these are real stretches of the imagination! Just how would we go about getting new slots and rights to restart SEA-LHR? And the only way I see us starting the BOS-NRT flight would be if AA threatens to start one of their own. ...Plus, where will we be getting the B777s to do all of this?

"United Airline:" we've never halted either our LAX-SYD or our SFO-SYD nonstops. For now, they both seem to be here to stay.

IIRC, Flyua, United still has the route authority for SEA-LHR, as well as an available slot or two from one of the multiple daily flights which were cancelled either through SFO, LAX, ORD, or IAD (3 daily to 2 daily at SFO, etc...). As for where the 777's will come from, that is simply a matter of scheduling--replacing excess capacity in the form of 747's on routes where 777's are currently flying, thus freeing those planes to operate new services.

WELL, then!

Any of you United smarties know if we could cancel our LHR-AMS or LHR-BRU services and instead use those slots for additional U.S. flights? If this is possible, then why did United announce last year its intentions to start DEN-LGW service? Why open a second London base of operations only for a single DEN flight, unless it was to be an add-on to a merged US Airways' LGW network? I don't remember if the DEN-LGW announcement was made on the heels of the US merger announcement, or a little earlier.

Also, FLY777UAL, as for all of those "multiple daily flights" that were supoosedly cancelled: weren't the third SFO and second LAX flights only extra seasonal allotments? I've never understood how UA and AA have gained extra LHR slots only for summertime travel. Does anyone know how this has worked in the past, and where they disappear to in the off-season?

The DEN-LGW service was to start if United were to merge with US Airways, as we would be serving Gatwick from Philly, Pittsburgh and Charlote. The Denver flight would be the link to Gatwick from the western United States.

Desmond, not to nit pick, but being as knowledgeable about United as you are, you should really know this. Also, you could check that online at http://www.ual.com

some of the 777 utilization will come from increased 744 use... AKL-LAX will go back to 744 once the season hits... it's not quite panning out like they thought it would and is costing United dearly... thank god they have some deals w/ ANZ.

In regards to LHR, right now there are 4 IAD-LHR flights. 1 LHR flight came from JFK (down to 2) and ORD has 3 at present. Friends said that SEA flight would come from one of the ORD or IAD flights.

In regards to the 777 for BOS, right now the terminal can't handle it... so expect to see that ONCE the remodel is complete and United gets its act in order. UA /// HAS /// the planes to do this, as the utilization of its fleet is down some 9% versus last year.

And in regards to where I get my info, I have alot of friends in convenient spots at United. If I tell you, it's a rumor. IF THEY TELL A PUBLIC FORUM, it's grounds for immediate termination...

Segment King -
Can you please elaborate on the AKL changes? Will the flight continue on to MEL again when the 744 is brought back? What were the problems?

Nickofatlanta,

I suppose so. The main reason why LAX-AKL went 777 is that the flight no longer goes onto MEL.

United Airline,

The AKL flight went to a 777 due to low loads. The 747 on that route could be utilized better on different routes.

UA 890/897 is the flight that goes between NRT-LAX. It is a 744. It looks like most of United's Asia operations from SFO is back to normal, following a very difficult year.

Yes. That's also a reason I agree.

AKL-LAX will go back to 744 once the season hits

Cool BUT when will that be? I understand that LAX-AKL no longer goes onto MEL.

Regards.

United Airline,

The "season" in AKL is summer, however, it is currently winter in New Zealand. As travel is down to NZ during the off season, the flight has switched to a 777 because the 747 can be better used.

I have heard nothing about AKL going back to a 744. In the schedules it says 772 for next summer to AKL as the time has changed slightly.

UA regularly had loads of under 50 on the AKL-MEL sector!! Ouch!! Hardly good for Business. UA served LAX-MEL non-stop for a time in 2000-2001!! Both AKL and MEL flights were 744's!!

So will UA reinstate non-stop service between LAX-MEL??

Unlikely, they support one 744 from SYD to MEL and back with their flights in the SYD-LAX/SFO markets.
