Have You Ever Seen Spotters From Up In The Air?

Tue Jul 02, 2002 6:07 am

Almost everytime I fly I always look for spotters from up in the air (either taking off or landing) but I never seen any. During the times I've landed in LGA, for instance, I figure I'd see at least one or two but nope. But of course, I see a bunch of them on the drive from the airport. Weird eh? Is it just me?

Have you been able to spot the spotters?

Landing at YVR on Friday morning, I spotted one guy (presumably a spotter) being patted down by police near the threshold of 08L.

Mirrodie was taking off on a flight from LGA a few weeks ago, and I was going to sit on my rock across Flushing Bay.

He took some shots clearly of the rock, and I was going to videotape his departure, but alas, I was violently ill and couldn't leave the house.

Flying into YVR last year I as well saw a row of spotters. Not to sure which runway it was though.

Landing at PDX two days ago on Alaska, there were a lot of people and small children at what I guess is an observation area along the highway that runs parallel with the PDX runways...it was kinda cool watching them watch us!

Actually I recall seeing the spotters at the old spotting location at DTW before it was closed. Back in 86 when I was still a little kid I flew an Eastern DC-9 from ATL to DTW and we landed on 22L back in those days 21R. There was a place between Goddard Road and the North Service drive near the threshold of 22L where you could watch planes land at 50-100 feet over your head. I saw several spotters as we passed over to land.

Only once at Newark 4 years ago. I was in a 737 of CO inbound from MSP, and there were a group of people looking up at us right before the runway!

SJCGuy,

The "highway" your talking about is Marine Drive. That is a good place to spot far as know. Never went out there because I'm afraid someone could pull a B757300 on me.

When I flew into MCO a few weeks ago, I saw a whole line of spotters at the end of one of the runways in a big dirt parking lot. I drove past them about 1/2 hour later and they were still there. It looked like a good spotting location.

Of course. I see very often during short final at FRA a bunch of spotters at the rwy18 spotting point.

I saw some spotters near the cargo building at LAX when I was arriving in a DL 764 (N840MH) from ATL on October 27, 2001. A few days later, this turned up on Airliners.net.

Once I landed on Miamis 09L I do remember plenty of spotters there at the holes, and about an hour later I was one of them  Smile

I have seen them at LAX on approach to runway 24R. Sydney I have seen them many times. I have also seen plenty during approaches into Kai Tak airport. not hard to spot spotters at these airports!

Today while landing at LGB I saw from my seat on the 757 as we flew over the last few houses, a cat run in fear and a dog barking up at us.

I figure that Hong Kong spotters are some of the easiest to see from the air... even though I didn't see any when I landed at HKG.  Sad

The day Concorde was at Stuttgart airport (STR), I saw thousands of spotters from the air at the airport. I'm serious !
I was on a scenic flight on a Germania B737-700 and all those spotters were around the airport area.
When we approach the holding point before take-off the pilot even joked, that they were all there because of our 737-700 ! Hehe, it was nice to see that many people around the airport.

Turning onto the runway at Shannon a few years back on an Aer Lingus A330-200 (EI-DUB, I believe), I saw a good sized group of spotters on the other side of the fence. Part of me was a little jealous since I've never been able to get that close to a large aircraft with engines running - never mind powering up for t-o! But upon reflection, they may have been jealous of me....

Hi,
Last night landing at EMA on bmibaby (WW5790) from Dublin about 1929 I saw a bloke with a camera hogging the boundry fence and he took a photo of us (hopefully that will show up here in the next few days) so I got my own back and erm took one of him lol see what comes out when I get them developed. Departing DUB there was a few people watching us, at the boundry fense where I had been all day long  Smile

Most times Ive flown there has been spotters around somewhere and i'm getting used of being watched  Smile
