Children Tragedy On Mid-Air Collision Today

Tue Jul 02, 2002 8:06 pm

Sad, very sad.

The main and most listened to radio station here in Catalonia, Catalunya Ràdio, reported that the Tu-154's pax were 70, plus 12 crew, figures yet to be fully confirmed. 20 of the passengers were adult tourists, the other 50 were 43 children and 7 tutors.

I report Catalunya Ràdio because the children were traveling to a summer camp in Vila-seca, and the Mayor has been interviewed.
This "Vila-seca" might not tell you much, but maybe you know better the name of Salou. This is because three years ago they were still the same town, Vila-seca having no own municipality. But today they are two different municipalities, the distance between the two towns is less than 1 km., and they are at Tarragona's Golden Coast, about 110 kms south of BCN.
The figures about the children must be quite accurate, because a group of people, among which the mayor himself, were ready to receive them for a 15-day summer camp holidays there. They were 43 children between 8 and 16 years old, accompanied by 7 adults.

Nothing has been said about a stopover at MUC, but the airplane was flying Domodedovo-Barcelona, from where the children would have been driven to Vila-seca by coach.

The very saddest thing of the whole story is that those children should have flown to BCN last saturday (remember saturdays are the "russian-airplanes-day" at BCN airport, with about 30 traffics), but they remained stuck at Moscow. They missed their flight because they had gone to the... wrong airport.

God bless them all.

No turbulent salutations today.  Crying

Details like this turn an already tragic story into genuine heartbreak. My deepest condolences from South Florida USA to the victims and the nations they hailed from.

And I would beg that the mantle of national pride be set aside in the investigation of this heinous mistake. It's so easy to make wild claims about causes, and just as easy to become indignant when an affront to one's heritage seems to have been made.

For the children's sake, see to it that they didn't die in vain. Fix the problems. Raise the bar. Make this the last incident like this for a very, very long time.
