'Lawn Chair Larry' 20 Years Ago

Wed Jul 03, 2002 11:35 pm

A guy in San Francisco took a brief flight in a lawn chair connected to balloons, as part of a TV stunt to mark the 20th anniversary of "Lawn Chair Larry," who got to 16,000 feet over Southern California. Anybody else remember this stunt?

The S.F. Chronicle has a nice article about it this morning (by one of their more talented writers, Steve Rubenstein.) Enjoy!

Yeah, I think there was a post about this guy awhile back. He apparently planned to shoot a few of the balloons with a gun in order to keep from going too high, but ascended too rapidly, and was too frightened to go through with it. He ended up in the approach pattern for LAX, at about 16,000 feet, and air traffic had to be directed around him. He eventually drifted out to sea, and was rescued by the Coast Guard. He got the Darwin Award because he committed suicide later on...he was too embarrassed to show his face in public.

Viewing the article about the guy in San Francisco, it looks like he decided to tether himself to the ground in order to keep from going too high. Wise decision.  Smile

Here's a link to a site with the entire thing (flight) on audio from radio transmissions. It's about 18.5 minutes long, and while I haven't checked the website they mention at the begining of the audio, they may have pictures as well.

Do you think that the center could have painted Larry and "equipment" on radar (as a primary target only)? Was it a large enough target?

He should have at least taken a good aviation radio with him to contact approach/center  Smile

Picture the conversation:
"And Good Evening Oakland center, November Mary Oscar Romeo Oscar November is type Latex Lawn Chair with you, climbing through ten, one-zero thousand for sixteen, one-six thousand"
