China Eastern Airlines 738 And A320?

Thu Jul 04, 2002 4:41 am

I read in a news article about China Eastern Airlines' (UM) delivery of their first Boeing 737-800. I know they also have the A320 on order, so why operating the 737-800 next to the A320? These aircraft are direct competitors to each other and are mostly used on the same routes. Does the 737-800 for China Eastern Airlines (UM) order also have to do with the larger Boeing order placed by the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) some time ago? Politics?

I welcome airlines who use both Boeing and Airbus aircraft, but this is a rare sight nowadays. Air France, Cathay Pacific Airways, United Airlines, and Qantas Airways are the very few airlines who will have both Airbus and Boeing aircraft in their (future) fleet. Fleet harmonisation seems to be the way to go nowadays, which I can understand in a way. Operating both Airbus and Boeing aircraft is more exciting from a spotter's point of view.

Any comments on this?

I agree, strange to have competing models in the same fleet most of the other airlines you mention have a mixed fleet, but no (or very little) overlap between models.
Usually if there is overlap the airline is going through fleet renewal/upgrade program where the older A/c (usually Boeing) are being retired. To have new aircraft of both manufacturers coming into the same airline is strange, unless one model is a lease option until the remainder of the order is received? Just throwing out some ideas.......

Its Politics, for the record its MU not UM and they have just received their first 73G not 738. Its CZ that have the A320 and are getting the 738.

Nobody "tells" China to buy anything. If anything at all, it's just part of the give-&-take in the world of international politics. It's no secret that big Airbus or Boeing orders has often been used as chips at the diplomatic bargaining table all around the world, especially with nations whose government has an active involvement in its national airline industry.

US paranoia. Do you really believe China will allow itself to be dictated by the US? China has been splitting orders between Airbus and Boeing fairly evenly in the past few years. If US had any say, US would love to have China staying mostly with the US products like they did a decade or two ago. CAAC used to assign the Beijing and Guangzhou bureaus with Boeing planes, and the Shanghai bureau with Douglas and Airbus planes. In the 90s, China had a few rows with the US and started ordering more and more Airbuses as a form of protest. With the number of Airbus planes ordered, the Shanghai bureau could no longer take all the non-Boeing planes ordered by CAAC. Then, mixed Boeing and Airbus fleet become more and more common among Chinese carriers. It's China's own doing, it has nothing to do with the US.

Perhaps China wants to study both Boeing and Airbus aircraft because they're thinking of developing their own line of single aisle aircraft.
I'm sorry, but, I don't see China as a nation you can strong arm into buying anything from anybody. The news casts over here keep referring to the U.S. as being the world's only super power, but, who really knows what China's got? Not a gamble I'm willing to take.
With over one fifth of the world's population, I imagine China is capable of doing almost anything they want...... Including designing and manufacturing airplanes for civilian transport.
And that's my two cents. I can almost hear the uproar already :-]

It's not a matter of whatever I say. I use examples to support my argument. You just stated as your opinion without any proofs.

hope that wasn't in refrence to me. didn't mean to offend anyone. There have been many instances of aircraft purchases being VERY political, tohugh (I'm thinking suadia right now). At anyrate China isn't bossed around by anyone. They use aircraft purchases as carrots in front of western politions. Its just shrwed politics.

According to the recent Chinese (incl. some news reported in Hong Kong, Macao) news reports, China Eastern Airlines (MU) didn't have any Airbus jets before 1985. However, until now, China Eastern Airlines has 43 Airbuses, about 60% of its fleet.

IIRC, China started ordering Airbus around mid 80s. MU, or the Shanghai bureau of CAAC, always had a large fleet of non-Boeing aircraft. They are the biggest MD-80 operator in China.
