Spectacular Take-Offs

Sat Oct 02, 1999 5:37 am

I'd like to know what spectacular take-offs everyone has seen. I've seen a few that made lasting impressions.. The first one that comes to memory was when I watched an Air France Concorde take off from Brown Field in San Diego back in 1989. I was at the end of the runway, waiting. I heard the roar of turbojets, then saw a cloud of black smoke. Then I was a white object hurtling down the runway, picking up speed. I watched the nose rise, then the Concorde lifted off at a high angle, banked slightly, and ROARED overhead. I took photographs the entire time. The sound was deafening, but what a thrill! Another take-off I saw - I was at Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was very foggy, and the end of the runway is far from the terminal. I heard the roar of jet engines, and looked towards the sound. One of Aeroflot's huge IL86 airliners had just lifted off and was climbing into a clearing in the fog, engines at full throttle, landing gear still cycling up, and it seemed amazing to me that something so huge should become airborne. It lumbered across my field of vision and into another fog bank and was no longer visible. What a rush! The most recent take-off that just brought tears to my eyes was one I saw at Chicago O'Hare a couple weeks ago. I was going back to my car in the short-term parking lot after having seen the mother of a friend off on a flight back to Russia. I heard the familiar sound of engines at full throttle, looked up and there was a HUGE Lufthansa 747-200, having just rotated and gear cycling up. It was so close, I could almost see passengers in the windows, and the roar of its GE engines was thunderous! The 747 is quite majestic on take-off as well. I watched it until it was well out of my sight, then went to my car and drove home.

My favourite was at YYZ I saw a LH 747-400 roar overtop of me while I was on the 401 (highway) to the airport. Awesome. Post the pictures of the concorde.

I heard about a great one this morning, but I didn't get to see it myself...

United just donated a 737-200 to Purdue, and that aircraft today left Lafayette, IN to go to Seattle. Boeing will be using it to conduct tests on the rudder, or rudder modifications, or something to that extent, dealing with the uncommanded rudder movements that are suspected of causing several accidents. When the aircraft left this morning, it apparently took almost our entire 6000' runway 28, lifting off just before the end. From there, it flew to Boiler VORTAC (a navigation facility, for those of you who don't fly), which is 10.3 miles from the airport. It then flew to the FLITE intersection for a localizer BC landing on 28. This entire circuit took the 737 about 2 minutes, while the planes that we students fly on this same path in training take about 10. Upon returning to 28, the 737 did a quasi touch-and-go, with only the main gear coming into contact with the runway. The pilot flew the plane down the runway with the nose gear off the ground for most of the length, then added power and climbed off for the flight to Seattle. I hear it was pretty impressive - I wish I could have seen it myself.

Last year in March, I was on my way to YVR from SEA. I saw a Boeing Company 777 lift off from one of Boeing's numerous airfields in Washington state. That was an awesome sight I tell you. I also saw a very closeup of an AC A-340 taling off at YVR. I can still hear the engines!

I saw a Delta 767 take off @ DFW after my visit to texas.. It was amazind, RWY 17L i think... but it just lifted off and went up so steeply, especially for a 763!

Also an AA757 @ DCA... i went right down to the middle marker and was right under the plane, it was no more than 50 feet above me, i even heard the vortex of the engines/ wings after the 757 was out of sight.

When is our B737 coming back? I want to see if this pilot can actually land it.

I don't know when it will be back... I just found out yesterday during my flight lesson that they were taking it! I wasn't here when it first came to Purdue in May - it arrived the same day that I left for the summer - but my understanding is that that was a pretty weak landing. For those who are interested, we had another unusual plane at LAF today - a TWA 727 that was chartered to fly the football team to Michigan for the game tommorrow. I don't know whether they will return tommorrow night or Sunday. The last time I saw TWA here was when our women's basketball team returned from the NCAA championships in San Jose, CA last season.

When I was in Perth attending an exchange programme with Guildford Grammar, I literally saw planes taking off every two minutes. They included QF 747s (SPs, 200s and 400s), BA's daily 747-400, SQ 777-200 and A340-300s, MAS 777-200 and loads of Ansetts.
