Just curious, but why do families of children need financial assistance? It's not like there has been any significant financial loss caused by a kid dying. These kids weren't exactly breadwinners and sole providers to their families. If anything, there is a cost SAVINGS as far as future investment in the child goes.

Bashkortostan isn't exactly the richest region in Russia, and most of the people live below what we would call the "poverty line". The families now have things such as funerals and other things which they would never in their wildest dreams have thought they would have to do, and frankly, I don't think a lot of them could actually afford it.

Aviatsiya,

I could be wrong but I heard on the news, that the children who died were all children of prominent and wealthy people of that certain area of Russia. Is that true? If so, they don't need money!

The children who were on the flight were actually Grade A students who were awarded a trip to Spain which was paid for by a UN programme. Not all of the kids were of businessmen.

However, regarding Sean's comment about these kids not being breadwinners. Within 10-15 years, these kids would be the breadwinners for not only their family, but also for their parents. Such is the way of life in a mainly rural republic, that is really no such thing as superannuation or a pension or governmental assistance.

Also, when 11/9 happened, hundreds of millions of dollars were donated to families of those killed....even though a lot of those people were very well off, even rich. But....

It isn't about how rich or poor people are; it is more to do with the human spirit and generosity of helping people in their time of need.

Perhaps I am being cynical here, but if the Russian crew are found to be at fault, and it appears they might not be, but if they are, the airline will be forced to compansate a lot of money. Perhaps they cannot afford this, so are asking for donations so that THEY can then compensate the families and cover themselves. Or, maybe I am just being cynical.

""These kids weren't exactly breadwinners and sole providers to their families. If anything, there is a cost SAVINGS as far as future investment in the child goes.""

I have yet to hear a more callous statement in regards to this accident. I am sure the parents of these children will be thinking in terms of cost savings, not!

Thanks for posting that Scotty. I did notice that "BAL" were pretty prompt in putting up pax list etc etc on their website.

Cheers,

You are being cynical. I have told, as you can also see from their website, that the "fund" is being looked after by the MCHS (http://www.emercom.gov.ru).

People who contribute do so because they want to comfort the bereaved. It's a gesture of humanity, not a financial issue.

I would be willing to contribute something to these families but the link to emercom is in Cyrillic only which I cannot read unfortunately and I saw no English links on their site.
