Any Airport With More Accidents Than Lax?

Fri Jul 05, 2002 1:10 pm

Call this topic stupid but I have been thinking that alot of accidents involve flights going to/from LAX.

A few that came to mind...

SAS DC-8 into ocean off LAX on landing in 1969
United 727 into ocean after takeoff from LAX in 1969
PSA 727 midair near San Diego on flight from LAX-SAN 1978
CO DC10 aborted takeoff from LAX in 1978 2 dead
AA DC10 on takeoff from ORD headed to LAX 1979
Pan Am 727 on takeoff from MSY headed towards LAX 1982
DL L1011 craft on takeoff from DFW heading to LAX 1985
Aeromexico DC9 midair landing at LAX in 1986
PSA BAE-146 inflight from LAX-SFO in 1987
UA Air 733 on landing in LAX 1991
CI 744 in air upset over Pacific headed towards LAX from TPE. emer.landing SFO , part of wing torn off - no fatalities 1992
China Eastern MD11 in flight upset over Pacific headed towards LAX from SHA in 1993 , 2 passengers lost
Egypt Air 767 from LAX-JFK-CAI over Atlantic in 1999
Singapore 744 on takeoff from TPE headed for LAX in 2001.

Do other airports have this bad luck?

Well, I don't believe any of the incidents you mentioned above has anything to do with LAX itself having bad luck (how could they?),especially the ones that were headed towards LAX. Most air disasters are caused by either human error, aircraft malfunction, or perhaps weather. I can't say that I'd tie any of the incidents to LAX or any other airport where accidents have occurred.

LGA had one in 89 killing 2, one in 92 killing 34 I think, one in 93 and another in 96.

a very busy airport with short runways with water at the end of all of them (except one, but just beyond the end of that one is a highway with a 35 foot drop straight down anyway).

Appetite for disaster.

If you are going by those standards with the flight beginning or ending at the airport but not necessarily being at the airport then I would say JFK leads it. But actually you forgot to mention that three of the aircraft used on Sept 11 were LAX bound too.

Last fall the AA A300 crash after take off JFK-Puerto Rico(?)
July 2000 Air France Concorde CDG-JFK crashed upon take off at CDG
Oct 1999 Egypt Air 767-300 JFK-Egypt crashed out in ocean
1997? Swissair MD-11 JFK-Switzerland crashed near Halifax
1996 TWA 747 JFK-CDG either fuel tank or shot down
Jan 1990 Avianca 707 Bogota-JFK ran out of fuel in holding pattern near JFK
December 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 747 LHR-JFK blew up in air by bomb
Sept 1983 Korean Air 747 JFK to Seoul shot down by Russian jet
June 1975 Eastern 727 MSY-JFK crashed from Windshear at JFK
Sept 1974 TWA 707 Tel Aviv to JFK crashed near Greece
Dec 1972 Eastern L1011 JFK-MIA crashed in Everglades
Dec 1968Pan Am 707 JFK-Caracas crashed in Caribean
Nov 1965 United 727 JFK-SLC crashed at SLC
Nov 1965 AA 727 JFK-CVG crashed on approach to Cincinnati
Feb 1965 Eastern DC-7 JFK- Richmond crashed in ocean
June 1962 Air France 707 Paris Orly-JFK (still Idylwild) crashed in near Paris on takeoff
March 1962 American 707 New York Int-LAX crashed in Jamaica Bay
Feb 1961 Sabena 707 Brussels to New York crashed in Brussels
Dec 1960 United DC-8 MDW-New York Int- collided with TWA Connie over New York City
August 1958 KLM Connie AMS-New York crashed in Atlantic

Hlywdcatft- I didn't want to bring up the 911 planes, but you are right.

Looks like JFK has had more unfortunate planes going to/from than LAX. Didn't the LOT IL-62 that crashed in WAW a few years ago withe the Polish Wrestling team originate in JFK?

I think there'd be a point to this discussion if you were talking about an airport such as Tromso in Norway. But given that JFK, LAX and so on are gateway airports, isn't it obvious that a vast number of flights are heading for, or departing from, these gateways?

In which case, it's hardly surprising that these are the destinations involved when aircraft turn up on the news.  Insane

JFK has had it's fair share of high profile incidents:

As mentioned:
TWA 800
Egyptair 990
Swisair 111
AA 587

But Arsenal, only 1 of those four happened AT the airport. With the exceptions of the TowerAir crash, the others merely just departed from there. I don't think that counts.
