AA 777 Emergency Landing At YYZ

Sun Jul 07, 2002 8:21 am

Hello,

I saw an AA 777 make an emergency landing at YYZ today, it should still be there. There were reports of fumes in the cabin, and they were about to evacuate via the slides, but decided to see if it they could make a regular deplaning. They didn't evacuate in the end, thankfully. Does anybody else have any other information?

Where was it coming from and what time did it land? My dad was supposed to be home 4 hours ago and we (the family) haven't heard anything from him. Hope all are ok!

Flyingbronco05- I have a gut feeling it was from coming from Tokyo as it was a 777 and I seriously doubt any AA transatlantics go in the way of YYZ and AA does not fly anywhere else in Asia other than Tokyo.

Actually, pretty much every AA transatlantic flight (from ORD, DFW or even JFK)goes near enough Toronto for it to be considered a viable diversion airport. Remember, go north of Toronto and you are hard pressed finding a decently large airport till you hit Europe!  Smile

According to ftytecomm.com it was Flight 0047 from LHR. I was at T1 tonight and saw the aircraft being towed from mid field to T3.

Are we talking the same plane here? See thread: AA B777 Emergency Landing @ YYT http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/869545/

It's on the news in Toronto. Apparently fumes smelled in flight deck and cabin. My buddy just came home from his flight in YYZ and said that AA has sent another 777 to YYZ to get the pax, he saw the pax all sitting in the lounge with blankets. I wonder if they were given a hotel during the delay?

Ktliem@yvr, no we're not talking about the same plane. However that thread you linked does not show up anymore.

This emergency landing was Saturday July 6th at about 17:00 or so. I was obviously surprised to see it at Pearson, and knew something was wrong. Of course, seeing the fire trucks following it, and them saying to the tower that they might have to evacuate right there, it was obvious that this was a serious situation.

I too was at Pearson, near the infield cargo area when it was being towed from there to T3. I'm still wondering what happened and hopefully somebody has some info.

I'm glad that there wasn't an evacuation, for everybody's sake, but I do believe that at least one person was brought out on a stretcher.

Actually, AA discontinued their SJC-TPE flight a while back. They still do SJC-NRT, but for Taipei you need to take the codeshare with EVA out of SFO.

Exactly exactly. I just came back from work at YYZ. There are two AA 777s sitting at Gate C-30 and C-31. I believe the one sitting at C31 was the one with problem. Pax has started to board the one at C30 at around 23:35. As far as I remember, the one sitting at C30 should have registration nbr N**AK, at least sth. like that. I saw a pallet of cargo at fwd cargo hold 12 too. If I had an camera, I would have taken a couple of pics since this is a rare scene that two AA777s parking side-by-side at YYZ T3. Also, as far as I can recall my memory, there had be one AA777 sitting in the cargo field at around 20:00. Back then it had already raised my curiosity.

Darn! Missed the departure! :-
So, was it the flight bound for LHR or ORD when it made it's unscheduled stop into YYZ?
When you say they didn't evacuate the aircraft, does that mean those buses weren't filled with passengers from the flight? Also, the person we saw being lifted/carried off the aircraft was the only passenger to leave the plane? Hmmm...
Grant (gMonney) Took some cool pics of the AA777 that we all may be able to view on torontoaviation.com some time soon. He also got a few good pics of other aircraft departing off 33 (L/R ?) Heck! We even made an acquaintance with a GTAA staff member!
All in all, another exciting day at Pearson :-]

Hey Tony, I want to see those pictures! I wish I had a digital camera  Sad

What I meant about evacuation was, that they didn't use the slides, rather, they just deplaned using stairs. I'm going to leave early today for work to see if anything is going on at the airport.

Is anybody going to be at YYZ today? I'm trying to see if there's interest in spotting today at YYZ, but so far, there doesn't seem to be, as my thread went by unnoticed.

LOADS of trans-atlantic overflights go over YYZ and pick up the same track as YYZ flights over the Atlantic(CVG,ORD etc)

Oops, I was thinking of YVR. It must have been bound for ORD(as is the case).

I thought AA would have let them clear US customs in Toronto, but I guess not.

I did see a report at work this morning about the 777 that diverted to YYZ. It was enroute from LHR, and apparently as mentioned previously, there was a "smoky smell" in the cockpit and cabin. It said the aircraft landed without incident, and deplaned as normal.

The same report also mentioned the TW 767 that diverted from LGW to LHR. Apparently they had complete failure in one engine, and had to declare an emergency into LHR. It also stated that they didn't have enough time to dump any fuel, and thus came in very heavy to LHR.

Sorry, I don't have any further details, I just sort of skimmed through it at work this morning.

Aloha.

Any ideas when the 772 will leave?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

FYI, AA0047/06JUL departed to ORD.

Today, I still saw the AA772 parked in the centre cargo field. The gate should be 501.
