Best Viewing @ LHR

Sun Jul 07, 2002 12:00 pm

I will be stopping over at Heathrow later this month and I want to know the BEST places to view all the action?? I have heard that there is some sort of observation deck ontop of T2. Is this a good place to go?? What exactly can you see from there?? Would it be comparable to the theme building at LAX?? Any info would be great.
Thanks!

Viewing deck on T2 is the Queens Building and it offers pretty good views of 27L /09R, T2 and T4 in the distance, most aircraft will taxi past at one stage or another.
Its free to go onto open from 0900 to dusk in the summer and theres a small cafe and aviation shop up there s well. Usually very busy at weekends. Never been on the theme building at LAX so I can't compare them I'm affraid. Any more info you need?

If u want to see take-offs or landings from 27L, then the spectator gallery on T2 is perfect. You have a clear view of the runway ahead plus close-up shots of aircraft at their stands in T2, mainly the likes of LH,AF,SR,AZ,BMI,IB etc. T4 and all of BA's plane can be seen far in the distance.

How long has admission to The Queen's Building been free? Admittedly, the last time I was there was 1981(!) and there was a small fee then. Luckily, I will have a chance to visit again soon in a few weeks time and can someone confirm that 9 am is the opening time on Sundays as well. Thank you kindly and greetings from Cork!

Lets get this straight, there are NO spectator facilities in Q.B. they are actually ontop of T2.

Also you can go to the roof of the T3 car park for a limited view of 27R/09L or try the roof of the T2 car park for a view of some of the T3 stands, but be perpared to be moved on by security.

You could also take a bus to the BAA visitor centre that gives great views of the northern side of the airfield, T1 and 27R/09L. Bus numbers are 111,555,556,557,140,285. All are free round the airport roads, get off outside McDonalds, opposite the Renaissance Hotel, and the visitor centre is in the silver building next door, but they don't really like spotters hogging the place, and no scanners, so try and be descreet so they don't chuck you out, they also have some memorabelia from days gone by to look at too.

Enjoy.  Smile

Awsome! This looks pretty good. I am staying the night at the Renaissance Heathrow Hotel. Apparently the rooms there have a good view of one of the runways so I have requested one of those rooms. I can't wait to spend some time at Heathrow! I want to watch the Concorde fly out! Thanks for all the information guys.

Concorde leaves at 10:45 from the runway your hotel room faces.

So would I get a good view of the Concorde leaving from the observation area at T2?? Also are there any aviation related shops at Heathrow airport or around there??

no ,from the viewing area Concorde will usually depart from behind you, I don't know the best place to view it from, but I'm sure some one here could tell you. There is an aviation shop at the observation area and a very good model shop in the Sheraton Hotel.

I found the following list of airlines and the terminals where the are handled (information was obtained from the BAA website):

T1: El Al, Aer Lingus, British Midland International, British Airways (European flights), Cyprus Airways, Finnair, Icelandair, LOT Polish Airlines, SN Brussels International, South African Airways, Swiss Air Lines, Virgin Express.

T2: Aeroflot, Air Algerie, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, British Midland International, British European, Croatia Airlines, CSA, Iberia, JAT Yugoslav Airlines, Lybian Arab Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, Malev, Olympic Airways, Riyal Air Maroc, Syrian Air, TAP Air Portugal, TAROM, Transaero, Tunis Air, Uzbekistan Airways, Yemen Airways.

T3: Air Canada, Air China, Air India, Air Jamaica, Air Mauritius, Air Namibia, Air New Zealand, ANA, American Airlines, Bangladesh Biman, British Midland International, British Airways (MIA flights), BWIA, Cathay Pacific Airways, Continental Airlines (operated by Virgin Atlantic Airways), Egyptair, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Eva Air, Ghana Airways (bankrupt?), Gulf Air, Iran Air, Japan Airlines, Kibris Turkish Airlines, Korean Air, Kuweit Airways, Lithuanian Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Middle East Airlines, Nigeria Airways (bankrupt?), PIA, Qatar Airways, Royal Brunei, Royal Jordanian, SAS, Saudi Arabian, Singapore Airlines, Sudan Airways (?), Thai International Airways, Turkish Airlines, Turkmenistan Airlines, United Airlines, Varig.

T4: British Airways (intercontinental flights/ UL flights. UL=SriLankan Airways), Kenya Airways, KLM, Qantas, Sri Lankan Airways).

From all this I've noticed that most airlines I want to photograph are handled at Terminal 3. As I will most likely be spotting on T2 (Queens Building) if I go, I would like to know if these aircraft can be photographed from the Queens Building? Does anyone know what the frequency of the flights of Air Namibia, Sudan Airways are? I would like to photograph these airlines as well (if they still operate to LHR).

Will all aircraft arriving/departing LHR taxy in front of the Queens Building (T2)? Will a 300 mm lense be sufficient to photograph taxiing aircraft from the Queens Building (T2)?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Regards,

AC320,if you want to get an up personal view of Concorde on takeoff you'll need to walk round the perimeter road to the West end of the airfield. It'll be about a 30 minute walk from the hotel but you get a good view of the airfield.

A slight correction: Swiss operates from T2, not T1.

A388,

If u want to see flights/airlines taking off from T3, then the observation deck on T2 will be sufficient, providing that take-offs are from 27L. Aircraft taxiing from T3 will pass by the T2 spectators area.

Thank you, Arsenal@LHR, for the update. By the way, I follow Spurs! So looking forward to some spotting again at LHR on Sunday fortnight. Even thinking of buying a camcorder for the occasion.

There's always the M25!

The traffic is never moving round the Heathrow junctions.

 Big grin

Seriously though, you'll actually get some shots of the planes just above you.
