Jet Airways Intl' Expansion?

Sun Jul 07, 2002 2:07 pm

Does Jet Airways have approval to expand to international flights from India to the Middle East or South Asia?

I think there Boeing 737-800 would be good for flights to Dubai or Colombo?

Do you think Jet Airways could or will expand to international routes?

Jet Airways have been really brave in their endeavors to be a great Domestic Airline which they achieved. To reshape themselves into regional airlines it will take a herculean effort. It will be difficult for them to match the fares offered by other airlines. 737-800 are more than capable of flying to the middle east. 9W infact sends the 737s to Changi SIN for maintainence.

IC and AI wont be in any hurry to let in Jet! And already Indians are flying at competitive fare levels internationally withouts Jet's "assistance"!
So I dont see their entry to International any time soon!

I have always argued for opening up the International sector to Indian carriers like 9W and IC. (9W has run a decent show, though undeniably they too have issues.

I am sure 9W and S2 can do a decent job flying to the Middle East, SAARC countries and KUL/SIN/PER.

Let 9W have Karachi, Kabul and Yangon for starters. Then we'll see how eager they are to run international routes....  Smile

Well, lets see if AI can make a profit out of Karachi, Kabul and Yangon. If it weren't for hapless Keralites being bussed out to the Middle East, I doubt if AI, Emirates, or any number of Gulf based carriers would be reporting profits. In any case, I'm sure Naresh Goyal could eke out a profit margin out of Karachi or Kabul by hook or by crook.

Sean, do you know what bilateral policies India has with Pakistan in terms of 4th and 5th freedom rights. Could IC or AI ever fly passengers into Bom or Del and hub them out to destinations in, say, the US or the Far East?

AFAIK, going back to the early 90s as my data point, Air India had a policy to not transport Pakistani nationals on routes to/from India. They could be transported on 5th freedom sectors, and undoubtedly IC was allowed to transport them on their routes to/from Pakistan and domestically, but a Pakistani national was simply banned from flying BOM-LHR on AI, even if they wanted to.

Well, Jet Airways has for long been asking for permissions to operate international routes , In one edition of Business today (Don't remember which one ) Naresh Goyal was quoted saying Jet air would consider purchasing or leasing bigger aircrafts to cater to international routes. Things as they stand as of now , the government is yet to allow private airlines to go international. As TKMCE puts it IC and AI are going to be fighting pretty hard not to allow this .
Sahara , may claim to be one hell of an airline but still have miles to go to even come anywhere near Jet . They have off late started aggressive marketing and improving their services and putting in more a/c's not with too much luck though.

Jet Airways those have some good alliance agreements with British Airways and KLM/Northwest Airlines. I think that helps Jet Airways on some routes also.

Jet Airways started a 3:00am flight from Mumbai-Bombay to Hyderabad because they now alot of people from international flights fly into Mumbai-Hyderabad at 11:00pm at night and had to stay at airport until 6:00am.
