More Plane Thoughts From BUF

Sun Jul 07, 2002 11:31 pm

To all:

Only a couple of weeks since posting about the absence of US Airbii in BUF,
I now see them on a regular basis. I believe these are A319's based on the size, but they look quite smart in US dark blue. Somehow, the smaller Airbus seem to lack the aesthetic appeal of the 737NG or the A330/340, but that's a personal opinion. After all, "handsome is as handsome does" and Airbus certainly sells plenty of them.

The UPS 757F has returned; this wonderful ship went right over the house early last week. On another aesthetic note, I often wonder why people criticize this craft for being "too long, too thin", ect. This a/c, like the A340, is wonderfully reminiscent of my favorite, the DC8, which incidently, I hope UPS soon brings back to BUF. UPS is about the only carrier which can bring you the DC8, 757 and the A306!

The AA 738's have now been absent from BUF for ~ 2 years now. After a rather long run of initial service here, AA has removed them and BUF has seen a monotonous parade of MD80's with the occasional F100.  Big grin

There has been a notable absense of charters out of BUF; no (sadly)AirTranSat or North American visits to my knowledge this year.

Vanguard still has only weekend service with old-color 732's. No sign of any of their new MD-80's. Based on the files I've seen in the Photo Index here, these are some very smart-looking ships.

As always, best wishes to all the Buffalo expatriates out there; I'll let you know if anything noteworthy in aviation happens here.  Big grin

Regards,

F4N

Thanks for the updates. I know a bunch of us Buffalonians living in other cities like to hear the latest aviation news from KBUF. Maybe when football and hockey season picks up again, you will see some interesting charters and maybe even a widebody or two.

Is US flying any A321's into BUF? US has been using them at ROC on weekends, and then when I was home a month ago I saw one during the week. Generally the largest passenger planes at ROC are the 150-seat variety--320, 734, 722 or M80. What is FedEx flying into BUF nowadays? We get A310's daily at Rochester. I saw the UPS A300 at BUF several times in 2000 and 2001, but haven't been there since 9-11.

I remember when my family drove past BUF on trips west years ago, how thrilled I was to see Eastern L-1011's.

It's always a pleasure to hear updates from any of the Upstate airports.

Jim:

Buffalo ops pretty much mirrors what you see in Rochester, mostly the 150 seat flavors. I have not yet seen an A321 in BUF, but then again I only recently saw my first A319 here. I suspect that a 321 will be as novel here as a 752 is.

FedEx continues 727F service in BUF. I would love to see a 310F, but so far it's a nogo. I've been most interested in FedEx lately since a noteworthy decal manufacturer has released a FedEx series in the major airline scale. Kit availability leans towards the A310; space realities in the house; the 727.

I was told that AirTran has finally started 717 service here although I have been unable to verify.

I have heard a rumor of ATA to BUF in the future, but while that would most interesting, I have difficulty seeing it as reality.

Best regards,

F4N

I was just in BUF this weekend. MY family had a reunion in Batavia and we flew into and out of BUF on USAirways. Noticed that Ryan International had an old SWA 732 that was probably a Casino Charter to ACY. I noticed Delta had a ton of 727s into BUF including ones with the new new colors. I had to pick up some family members at ROC. Usairways does have a morning A319 service to LGA but I am not sure what else they have over there. I believe BUF and ROC will continue to grow and you will start to see more and more aircraft varities at the airport.

I have heard a rumor of ATA to BUF in the future, but while that would most interesting, I have difficulty seeing it as reality.

I think ATA is unlikely in Upstate NY too, but not because of any weakness in the westbound market. All four Upstate airports have a big westbound service component--AA, UA, NW all run mainline service and CO, DL have RJ service.

The low-fare service in Upstate NY is mostly southbound--AirTran at BUF and ROC; JetBlue at BUF, ROC, SYR; Southwest at BUF, ALB. What westbound low-fare service there is, mostly skips 'flyover country' and only impacts the far west; WN leaps to PHX and LAS from BUF. JetBlue's JFK transcons are mostly to secondary airports and haven't had a big impact on westbound fares or enplanements in Upstate NY.

Southwest service from BUF and ALB to the MDW hub would be a hot seller, I think. Not only would it offer one-connection flights right to LAX and SAN, but importantly it would cover lots of terrain in between--STL and MCI plus many medium-size midwestern cities. I would be surprised if WN *doesn't* start BUF-MDW and ALB-MDW within a year. The big new airside building at MDW is almost finished. WN says a big chunk of the 3,000 new positions it announced in March will be at MDW.

Vanguard has done poorly on BUF-MDW-MCI because it doesn't offer many connecting opportunities. ATA would not offer near as many connecting opportunities as WN. ATA's Saabs--all it could fill on UNY routes, I think--would have a hard time competing against shiny WN 73G's with better connecting opportunities.

If anything, I could see ATA starting Saab service to ROC and SYR because WN doesn't serve those markets. When US goes under, though, all bets are off: I predict WN in ROC and SYR within months of US's demise. By 2005, it's conceiveable that WN could control 30 percent or more of all air traffic in Upstate New York.

I know United uses the CRJ on the IAD flights and also some to ORD. Do they use any larger equipment at BUF?

Hey,

Doesnt BUF also see the L-1011 and Occasional A310 from Air Transat during the winter season? I do believe they do charters from BUF to Cancun and Punta Cana. Must be real good to see it at BUF.

I saw on justplanes.com that AA will halt service to DFW at the end of Sept.

Current timetable shows 6 dailies on BUF-ORD: 3 735 (one becomes an A320 in Sept) and 3 CRJ.

AA is canceling BUF-DFW? I wonder if that will be reinstated with ERJ's--say one AM and one PM--at some point in the future. It's now one daily M80 if I remember right. 2 ERJ's would be a 30 percent reduction in capacity, thus lowering the profitability bar. Of course AA's "Scope Nazi" pilot union is hamstringing Eagle and RJ ops ("NO RJ'S FOR YOU!!") so it's probably more economical for AA to cancel BUF-DFW than run smaller a/c and try to make it work. Yessir, passengers come come first at the Cartel....

FYI.... AA direct service to DFW from BUF is seasonal. They did it that way last year also. This seasonal service is communicated to AAdvantage passengers in advance of the spring/summer season.
