The New MEX

Sun Oct 03, 1999 4:20 am

I know this topic has already been discussed, but no replies were allowed anymore so I'm starting it as a new topic.
It's been said that the new Mexico City International Airport is very likely to be built in the state of Hidalgo, but there's also plans to build the new MEX in Texcoco, which is a few miles northeast of the actual airport. This location is much more convenient, since it's closer to Mexico City than Pachuca, Hidalgo. Texcoco is also better than building additional runways or terminals in the existing airport, because there's simply no space to do so. Please share your opinions regarding the Texcoco plan. Thanks a lot in advance.

That's good!!

Mexico City airport, if built in Hidalgo will be a completely fraud.

Saludos companeros.

For the sake of the other participants in this forum, and using what for better or for worse is the lingua franca of commercial aviation, which I prefer to call Canadian (nice and neutral!), I don't see any action on a new MEX airport until the eventual ownership situation of Mexicana and AeroMexico are fully defined. This may take several more months. At this juncture it would probably be cheaper to buy existing homes/buildings/property around Benito Juarez than to be talking about building new access roads, etc. What do you think? As new aircraft get quieter, and DC-10 and 727's get retired would keeping the current location be that bad?

Any opinions about just biting the bullet and expanding the current facility considering its good location?

Leo:

Hmm, well seeing that most replies are in spanish I'll write one in spanish too, but I'll write one in english too.

Ok, now in english   The Texcoco option, while closer to the city would damage a very sensitive area (ecologically speaking) apart from that the area is very fog prone wich would not help with delays and such, on the other hand, the Hidalgo option, while much further away from the city, is perfect climatically speaking as it is a very dry climate and it would provide bigger growth oportunities, also, the terrain around the airport is much more apropriate ! it may be a bit far from the city, but not farther away than airports like Oslo's Gardermoen or Tokyo's Narita.. When the new Mexico City airport is built it will certainly become one of (if not THE) most important hub for latin america.

OK, I clicked on this topic because I was interested to know about MEX. Unfortunately just about everything that was said was in Spanish   Could you guys, for the benefit of the non-Spanish speaking population please post in English, or both...?? Thanks.

Yeah I guess that to non spanish speakers it must be kind of weird, so I'll sort of write up a brief explanation of the whole issue..

as some of the people who've been to MEX have probably noticed, it is by now grossly inadecuate for the traffic needs of Mexico City and it offers absolutley no growth potential, although it has been renovated and it is nice, operationally, the twin runways are too close to offer the possibility of dual operations and there is only 1 long main taxiway, all this added to the fact that by now, urban sprawl has grown all around the airport and of course, this turns it into a potential safety hazard.
For many years there has been debate over where to build the new airport and now it is narrowed down to 2 options.. Texcoco, east of the current airport, the benefit of this area is that it is close to Mexico City, however as I said before, these are wetlands and building an airport here would be terrible for the environment, add this to the fact that the ground is not suitable for a contruction such as an airport as it is very soft. Also, if the new airport were built in Texcoco, the current MEX would have to close because of conflicting flight paths.
The other option is in the state of Hidalgo, north of Mexico City, this is far away from the city, however it is pretty much open land for miles and miles so it is the ideal site to build a new airport, it fits all the criteria of an ideal airport site.. if the new airport were built here there would be no need for the current airport to close and it could still be used for domestic operations and such. Of course.. this would probably mean some cost to airlines like Mexicana or AeroMexico that would have to operate from both airports, but I think the hub capabilities of the new airport would greatly outweigh the negatives of operating two airports.
