Canadian Gvmt Forces Approval Of Unsafe Helicopter

Tue Jul 09, 2002 5:28 am

"Despite concerns about aviation standards, Transport Canada issued a certificate of airworthiness for a controversial Russian helicopter after extensive diplomatic pressure from President Vladimir Putin and other top Russian officials, according to documents obtained by The Globe and Mail."

"In a memo last summer, Transport Canada said the helicopter did not comply with its airworthiness standards."

"The lobbying effort continued in Russia, with Canadian Transport Minister David Collenette meeting with a Russian official in Moscow in July, 2001."

This is another example of where our beloved elected officials will buy political favors with the safety of their voters. It's absolutely disgusting that the government would pressure Transport Canada to approve an unsafe design. I hope Collenette is killed in an accident with one of these helicopters- it would serve him right.
Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

Whilst there are some concerns with the helicopter, I've seen it fly and talked to the crew who fly it in Canada who are aware of its shortcomings - and its exceptional capabilities.

Its done OK since it started regular flying some time ago under the exemption and the story is written in a typical "let's not let all the facts get in the way of a good story" fashion.

Other examples have flown in Western Europe, though retaining their Russian registry.

As to your final comments, you really need to seek help if that's how you really think.
