Boeing Offers New Planes For Balkan

Tue Jul 09, 2002 7:37 am

Fresh from one of the local newspapers:

A Boeing team lead by their Regional Director for Southeast Europe will visit Sofia to meet with Balkan officials regarding the proposed lease of new Boeings. Apparently Airbus has recently also offered LZ some A/C, but airline officials consider them to be too expensive to operate in the current circumstances.

Balkan's routes are currently operated by 2 733's from LH + 1 leased Tu-154. The Boeings are on a 10-month (?) lease, so we maybe looking at new Boeing leases to follow (GEGAS, IFLS ?). Good news if true. Balkan's current condition is pretty pathetic so lets hope things will improve.

Thought it was Airbus who were accused of giving aircraft for free. Given the sad state of Balkan's finances I wouldn't count on this going ahead unless boeing are going in for giving very early Christmas presents.

Sad really that the airline has had such a tough time compared to LOT, CSA, Malev and even TAROM

Maybe they're the target for those 20 717s Boeing has parked out in the desert?

I don't think a 717 lease is likely at all. LZ has operated 737s since 1990 (with some brief interruptions) so they already have trained crews and mechanics. They are simply not in financial position to introduce a new type. So if they order anything at all, you can bet it will be 737s.

I think they will not order any aircraft, I am sure they will lease some. Perhaps they will take a mix of 717 and 737. If I look at their route structure this would make some sense....
