PrivatAir Expects More Scheduled BBJ Flights ...?

Thu Jul 11, 2002 12:14 am

A PrivatAir spokesman said on a trade show (EBACE) it wants to order more BBJ's in order to offer Business Class only services to other airlines, the same way it does for LH. They told the press they are talking to two undisclosed US based Airlines on the subject and even spread the rumor on their own site :

There was also much speculation at the show and in the media about PrivatAir's future expansion plans, including the possible acquisition of further aircraft to operate shuttle services between other city pairs.

Who you think are those airlines ?

Continental seems a likely candidate IMO but the other ?

Continental NY-London City would be technically possible. A London City-Wall Street Express ... BA would hate that ..

Since when have BBJs been able to land at London City?  Insane

How long is the runway at London City?
Firings, if well done, are good for employee morale.

3900'. Not to mention it has very very strict noise regulations and a steep glideslope. Nothing bigger than a 146/ARJ has landed there.

That's right, they are in talks with other airlines, also in the States. They expect to get an agreement with one more partner until the end of July.

I also heard the rumor that one of these airlines could be United. But that's just a rumor. Nothing confirmed yet.

Does anybody have a little more details about their fleet, expect of the BBJs and the 757? What other planes do they have?

@Michael: Have a look at http://www.privatair.com You'll find very detailed information about every Privatair aircraft.

I also heard of Air Canada.

I wouldn't be surprised if Delta was in the running. They have the money right now to undertake such a project. Delta also has several routes that were cut in the past years that could warrent such a project:

JFK-WAW
JFK-Stockholm
JFK-LYS
JFK-MAN

And new routes could be started, such as JFK/ATL-GLA, ATL-SVO (good for when Aeroflot joins SkyTeam) etc. This aircraft would be able to service all of Europe and South America from both ATL and JFK, markets where this experiment would work (unlike SLC or CVG).

I also think CO would be interested, since they have the huge EWR hub and would be able to add more destinations on.

I am not as optimistic as most.......lets first see if the Privatair/LH DUS-EWR route is a success. We are not just talking about 737NG transatlantic service here, but an "all-business class" service. This is a niche market for very specific city pairs.

Why would CO use the Privatair services? If they wanted to connect EWR with smaller cities in Europe, they could use their own 737-700 aircraft on the routes, which have the range. CO has stated that they do not plan to use anything smaller than the 752 to Europe.

The EWR-London City Express is really a cool idea, but, as stated above, its not possible.

I think that this is a very intersting topic. I think if CO were to do this they would equip their 737NGs with a BizFirst layout. The fares being offered on these flights across the Atlantic are something like $3300 dollars I have read. I am not sure if that is true, but I would think that to be a bargain. But like I said I was not sure if that was an introductory fare or something like that. EWR-LCY would be great but not possible. But I wonder if this would work.

CO could have a helicopter service from LCY-LGW. The Helicopter could land right by the plane and wisk the travelers onboard the 737NG. Once at EWR the plane could park at the Remote Stand and another waiting Helicopter could take them to the Wall Street Heliport. Of course you would need to work something out with Customs but it may be possible.

This can only work in markets that are high yield already and have enough O&D traffic to support all business class services. There are only a few such routes that fit the bill and I think that the NYC-LON/PAR/FRA and the LAX-LON/PAR/FRA (Yes, NYC/LAX/SFO-NRT are also possibilities) routes are probably the only ones that have a shot at it. DL, CO, and NW currently have no access to LHR. CO and DL operate out of NYC. I'd be very interested to see if this comes to fruition......

Thomas: Thanks, I know the homepage. I have read there that they have around 50 aircrafts. But I'm wondering if they own all these aircrafts or if they only do sub-charters for other air-charter companies?

Most US carriers pilots unions have scope clauses that only allow pilots on their seniority list to fly planes that are "certified" over a certain amount of seats and weight. The CR700 is just about the biggest thing that can be flown by an affiliate.

Nice website. I particularly like the interior photos and cabin layout illustrations. This is what I call a nice fleet! Lots of "heavy iron".

OK, sorry, here comes the kid in me.  Smile My fleet wouldn't have anything smaller than the Challenger 604 and probably an A345 addition. An updated interior look would be in the works as well. OK, I'm done now.  Laugh out loud

Why only O&D. A one stop trip instead of a two stop transfer can make a 2-3 hour difference for Business class passengers.

Say you live in Stuttgart and want to go to Cleveland, a one stop flight via SPL or EWR is much better then having to make two transfers on crowdy hubs.

How does it work on Heatrow, has 737 slot the same weight as a 747 slot, would seem unrealistic to me ..

LH says that they are getting 60% load factors on this operation. They also say that they have no plans to expand this to other cities.
