Old Pan Am Routes?

Thu Jul 11, 2002 4:47 am

I was looking at some pics of Pan Am and I was wondering if anyone had an online link to old timetables or old route maps. I was noticing there widebodies at locations such as YYZ and was curious. I know they use to operate a mini-hub out of my home airport of IAH. Any comments would be appreciated.

PAA used to fly 720Bs from IAH to Merida and Mexico city back in the late 60s-early 70s.

PA used to operate flights to Australia, with the 747 {200s & SPs} mostly, before United bought the Pacific flights ages and ages ago. Even the old PA flight numbers have been retained by UA, they went from PA816, PA815, PA842 & PA841 to UA816, UA815, UA842 and UA841. Not sure about the routings though, if they went via other countries in the Pacific.

AKL-LAX 747SP
AKL-HNL-LAX-IAH 747-100/200
Don't know whether they came from MEL or SYD to AKL though.

I have a feeling that in the 707 days the Sydney or Melbourne flight went via the Pacific Islands {PPT eg}. But the AKL-LAX service you mentioned NZ767 I have a hunch it might've come from Melbourne...UA might have kept the routing somewhat similar to the days when PA flew the Pacific. The Sydney flights, I'm not sure...I know the full size 747 and smaller 747SP used to fly the route, maybe seasonally. I'm sure the 747SP would've been introduced to compete with QF 747SP flights, as in one of my old QF timetables {AUG1/82} there are SP/200B flights ex-SYD going through either BNE, PPT, TSV and AKL and ending up in LAX. The city the flight went through depended on the day of the week.

I'm sure there was a SFO flight there somewhere too but can't recall whether it was ex SYD or AKL or both..........too loooooooooong ago!! Big grin

As for the 707 days, well I was just a dirty thought in my old man's mind then so I'm no help there either.
Brings back a few memories though.

When the SP's were introduced in the South Pacific, the routings were:

SFO-AKL-SYD 747SP. Routing later changed to LAX.
LAX-HNL-NAN-SYD 747-100. NAN was eventually dropped.

PA had at least a 3 year headstart on QF before they got their SP's and operated them SYD-SFO.

The following information is from my Pan Am timetables:
I will focus on operations at IAH:

November 1972:
Flt 501 MEX 707
Flt 509 MEX 707

April 25, 1976:
Flt 501 MEX 707

April 25, 1983: This timetable shows a "mini-hub" operation at IAH. This was likely the result of the merger with National Airlines 3 years earlier. Interesting to note that PA had DC-10 service out of IAH to MSY, JFK, and MEX. The number of daily departures is next to the airport code.
LAS 1
LHR 1
LAX 2
MEX 1
MIA 3
MSY 3
JFK 2
SFO 1
In addition to the above, Emerald Airlines operated a commuter service for PA out of IAH to other Texas cities.

I looked through several PA timetables, all from the '70's and early '80s, and I did not find any listed service to YYZ or any other Canadian city.

I hope this helps! I have other timetables, so if you want more specific information please let me know. I'll be happy to look it up for you.

Pan Am not only crossed the Pacific (of course), they also flew (with 707s and later 747s) from Sydney to Bangkok, Sydney to Singapore and Sydney to Hong Kong as stand-alone routes. The 747s saw Beirut, Tehran, Istanbul, Cairo, Karachi in the near east (plus a few Gulf ports), Saigon (scheduled), you name it.

NZ767: "[As for the 707 days] ...I was just a dirty thought in my old man's mind then so I'm no help there either. Brings back a few memories though." Memories of what? You naughty boy. Etc.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I have about six timetables from various periods in Pan Am's history... if I can get my scanner working, I'll add them to my site today.
