Question About USAirways

Thu Jul 11, 2002 5:16 am

Hey everybody, I was wondering if anyone knew what USAirways largest hub is, because on usair.com it says Charlotte, but in the local papers and news it says Pittsburgh. So which is it.. Charlotte or Pittsburgh?

Thanks, Airplanelover  Smile

I think that passenger-wise...CLT wins. But in terms of departures, they are normally very close and the winner in this catagory is sometimes PIT and sometimes CLT.

I found a little more up to date figures (May 2002)

CLT:
US Airways 299 Daily Departures
US Express 195 Daily Departures
--------------------
TOTAL: 494 Daily Departures
http://www.usairways.com/about/corporate/profile/factsheets/clt.htm

PIT:
US Airways 211 Daily Departures
US Express 278 Daily Departures
--------------------
TOTAL: 489 Daily Departures

http://www.usairways.com/about/corporate/profile/factsheets/pit.htm

PHL:
US Airways 220 Daily Departures
US Express 177 Daily Departures
-----------------------
TOTAL: 397 Daily Departures
http://www.usairways.com/about/corporate/profile/factsheets/phl.htm

I don't have any passenger numbers for just US Airways and US Airways Express out of these hubs. Maybe someone else can find this information for you.

Prior to 9/11, Pittsburgh was US Airways' largest hub airport, in terms of aircraft movements, with 500 daily departures. Charlotte eclipsed PIT, but only by a few flights since then and now they are about neck and neck. The Philadelphia hub is the smallest of the 3 in the US Airways system, with 300 or so daily flights, but it is US's primary gatway to Europe.

Here's how I like to break down the subtle differences between the three hubs in terms of service. PHL is the primary international gateway for US with about 9 daily transatlantic flights(PIT has 3 to LGW, FRA, CDG and CLT has 2 to FRA, LGW). CLT stands apart from the the others with it's extensive Caribbean service. CLT also has flights to most medium to big sized cities within the US Airways system. PIT is the big feeder hub for small towns (Johnstown, Latrobe, Elmira, Ithaka, Erie, etc...) because of the number of daily express flights they have--far more than either of the other two. PIT also has the largest number of transcontinentals. Pre 9/11 PIT usually had more daily departures over CLT simply because of the express flights but CLT as far as I know has always had more mainline flights. Sine 9/11 it's been pretty close. One month PIT will have more departures, the next it will be CLT.

how does usairways' caribbean service out of clt compare to that out of phl? i thought phl had just as many caribbean flts as clt if not more.

Much of the PHL-Caribbean services are not daily flights, and some are actually only weekly. If you look exclusively at the number of destinations served, PHL has more, but if you look at frequency you will find more daily flights out of CLT. Also, we are planning to further expand our CLT hub as a major Carribean gateway.

CLT is the No. 3 Caribbean gateway hub, after Miami and Philadelphia. US Airways will have non-stop flights to 13 Caribbean cities from CLT by November. That compares with the 22 cities American Airlines serves from MIA and the 14 cities US Airways will serve from PHL by December. Smaller Caribbean hubs include JFK and EWR with 12 each, and ATL with seven.
