JetBlue To Offer 16 Daily FLL-JFK Flights

Fri Jul 12, 2002 12:16 am

For the winter 2002/2003 season, jetBlue will double capacity between JFK and Ft. Lauderdale by offering 16 daily departures, in addition to eight dailies between PBI and JFK and two dailies between FLL and IAD for a total of 52 daily flights in and out of South Florida. jetBlue is now the #3 airline on America's most traveled long-haul route, and with thier expansion, can easily pass #2, Continental.

I think they should rather buy A321's than keep 16 daily flights !

That is a lot of flights between JFK and South Florida. The market between JFK and south Florida is that large?

WOW!!

The majors must have a business plan to counter Jetblue. I am pulling for Jet Blue to establish itself and to continue to expand their service throughout the nation.

I don't think Continental will allow that to happen (losing market share). I recently heard that Continental was considering starting hourly shuttle-type service from EWR-FLL starting this fall.

JetBlue's move is simply more handwriting on the wall. Florida is becoming firmly low-fare, low-yield territory. Those condo canyons on the Gold coast are filled with retirees who have loved ones in New York and other Northeast cities; that's why JetBlue can fill all those flights. Disney World of course draws families who won't go if fares are high. These are people who aren't going to be bought off with extra FF miles or upgrades.

JetBlue, Southwest, and AirTran can make money in the emerging Florida aviation market. I don't think Continental or anyone else are going to bleed themselves trying (unsuccessfully) to drive JetBlue, WN or FL out of Florida.

The Cartel will keep what Florida service is needed to please their FF people and serve their spoke cities who don't have low-fare service. And of course AA's Latin American MIA hub with its strong business-flier component, will contine to thrive. But the days of Eastern, Delta and PanAm running the Snow-to-Sunshine corridor are long gone.

Richardw, 750 miles is long-haul (under 750mi is short-haul; when DOT determines the figures, there is no medium-haul).

777d, South Florida-New York has roughly 81 daily flights from the three South Florida airports to the four NYC airports.

TWFirst, that would be great if CO did do hourly shuttle EWR-FLL service. I wonder how AA would respond. They currently offer 20 daily Miami-NYC flights, but to various airports (9x MIA-LGA, 5x MIA-JFK, 3x MIA-EWR/FLL-LGA).

DCA-ROCGuy, I agree. Florida is an important market none the less, though. Miami is a huge business market, as you stated, and Tampa is not that small a business market either. MIA-TPA also get's a lot of business travel, and then there also the intra-State routes to TLH, which do well yield wise thanks to last minute runs to the capital. Other than that, though, it's not great yielding.

Interesting
Good for them! Although I should note, it is up to 16 daily departures, so it won't be like that every day, only certain peak days and weeks in the winter season.

Sweet!

I don't know if the A321s would really work, though.

I think that part of jetBlue's business plan is quick turnarounds and efficient service. Unless a lot more staff were hired, this would probably affect these two principles in a negative manner.

By the way, can anyone give a revised JFK-FLL schedule?

I think given the huge demand for JFK-FLL/PBI flights and the fact that the A321 shares a lot of commonality with the A320, I wouldn't be surprised that B6 does order 10-12 A321's, primarily for their JFK-US West Coast and JFK-Florida service.
