I read somewhere recently that they are going to lease a 767 off Air New Zealand, don't know if it's true though.

Shame to see the 'bus go though-I had 4 faultless flights on it, and 6 on it's predecessor in the Bird of Paradise livery.

Bye bye Pixie!! I flew Air Nuigini once from Brisbane to Sydney.....I was on staff travel for the always full Qantas flight BNE-SYD which coincidentally started in POM, and the lovely guys at PX let me travel on their A310 on this domestic route. I will never forget it...had a great flight!

(their code for ground operations was Pixie - a take on their PX code! I killed myself laughing when the checkin agent radioed to her duty manager to see if it was OK for me to travel with them: "Pixie 2 to Pixie 1...." Loved it!  Smile  Smile

I think it is only on short term lease. I thought ZK-NCE was 1 of 2 763ER's NZ extended the lease on. Can someone confirm this.

Not a short term lease, but replacing the current A310. All of the information is on their website:

AIR Niugini board chairman Sir Michael Bromley confirmed yesterday that Air Niugini was close to finalising contractual arrangements to lease a Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

The Air Niugini board of directors, at their April and May meetings, recommended to the Privatisation Commission that the company terminate the lease on the Airbus A310 aircraft and replace it with a more modern Boeing aircraft.

Sir Michael said the new aircraft would provide Air Niugini with the opportunity to increase revenue and lower costs on the company’s international operations and secure its long term financial viability.

Training of flight attendants and air crew had commenced, with 11 Papua New Guineans selected for flight crew training.

Air New Zealand will provide maintenance and logistics support for the aircraft while Air Niugini gears up for the new operation, scheduled to commence services on the 19th of July.

While the Air Niugini flight and cabin crews undergo training in Auckland, the aircraft will be jointly manned by Air New Zealand and Air Niugini staff.

Sir Michael said Air Niugini had been able to take advantage of the current favourable market conditions for aircraft leasing to secure very competitive lease terms and conditions.

The A310, which has been operated by Air Niugini since 1989, will return to America where it will undergo a cargo configuration and return to service with Federal Express.

Sir Michael noted the huge workload and pressures on Air Niugini management and support staff involved in the exit of the A310 and introduction of the B767 and expressed thanks to all involved.

On completion of the Boeing 767 introduction project, management will transfer additional resource to a second project looking at the domestic fleet.

The directors recently approved the replacement of two F28-1000 aircraft with larger, more modern F28-4000 units.

Management will now be required to present recommendations on long term fleet plans to service the PNG domestic market by September 30.

I was just browsing through Bill Harms census and found that QF are currently leasing VH-OGD to Air Niugini (since 13/12/01) and that ZK-NCE will indeed be joining the Air Niugini fleet soon.

If this means potential growth for Air Niugini, it great! And with such a beautiful livery, it should still look stunning - A310 or B763.

Looking forward to some early images on Airliners.net . . . hard to photograph it in Singapore with only night-time arrivals and departures.

Air Nuigini sold the A310s to Fedex a few years ago, so this has been on the cards for a while. I just hope they paint the 767 into their colours!! They used to fly to HKG. I wish they still did!

What's so sad about it? I personally think the 767 is a better plane.

Keepin' it real.

I don't think it's accurate to say QF asked them to switch the aircraft for the new code share agreement- it has nothing to do with QF and they have no investment in PX.
