Freedom Air (NZ) Beefs Up OZ, Drops Dom NZ Service

No Domestic Flights For Freedom Air
12/07/2002 01:14 PM - IRN

The Air New Zealand Group today announced a major expansion of services to Queensland, one of the most popular holiday destinations for New Zealanders.

From October 27, the Group subsidiary Freedom Air will launch new direct services to Brisbane from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. It will also be providing direct services to the Gold Coast (Coolangatta) from Christchurch and expanding its current Auckland to Gold Coast services.

Freedom Air services will be withdrawn from domestic routes on September 23. The new Air New Zealand Express service is intended to offer substantially lower fares than are currently available on domestic main trunk services.

Freedom Air offers cheaper flights to travellers by cutting back on non-core activities - for instance, there is no frequent flyer programme or inflight video screen.

Freedom Air also does not provide inflight meals, though passengers are welcome to bring their own food on board, while on trans-Tasman flights, snacks and drinks are available for purchase.

Air New Zealand and Freedom are holding a conference this afternoon

One News said that Air NZ will stop operating most services into Brisbane. They will probably still keep a flight or two into the city to cater for the Star Alliance network and the upper market traveller.

Still, it's risky and I don't know if it would work. It should be interesting to see Qantas' response.

NZ will still operate a daily service from AKL to BNE still, all operated by 767's!
SJ will offer I think it was 3 flights from AKL to BNE.
NZ will offer 2 flights weekly from CHC to BNE, SJ will have a daily service.
NZ will no longer operate WGN BNE from OCT 27, SJ will operate 6 weekly flights.

WOw, with those figures, it looks like WLG has low premium passengers streaming through.
It also shows CHC is booming!!

$399-$429 doesn't sound that cheap. It's only a two hour flight, right? Ryanair can do £19 fares to their Italian destinations, that's two hours. What's the exchange rate? Unless the NZ$ is approaching parity with the Turkish Lira, I fail to see the bargain. What must the AirNZ fare be to make $400 on Freedom Air a good deal?!
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

It's closer to 4 hours than 2.

The NZ operated flights from CHC will use a 733!! So will all of the 733's have J removed??

Cedarjet,

Some recent media reports suggest that AirNZ will use Freedom Air to overt attention to AirNZ on flights to OZ. Most Aussies now associated AirNZ with the collapse of Ansetts so SJ is an easy way to avoid publicity.

Cedarjet,
I haven't got the latest figures, but $1.00NZ is roughly equal to $0.50US.
I don't know what it is in Pounds though.

Cedarjet - the transtasman fares have traditionally been "gougers" for many years - expensive even with advance purchase. Those Freedom fares mentioned above aren't too bad at all really. Both QF and NZ have been kept a tad more honest over recent years with other carriers now allowed to carry local traffic across the Tasman. Thai, China Airlines, Aerolineas, Polynesian among others are those that fly the routes and offer good alternatives to QF and NZ.(To give you an idea, full Y return SYD-AKL on either carrier is up in the over $1200's and the lowest apex at the moment is in the approx high $580's. Both offer specials lower than this on occasions but rarely under $400).
On a seperate note, Yowzer! No wonder the pilots are a tad angry and threatening to walk. I guess they see this, and possibly quite rightly, the thin edge of the wedge by NZ allowing it's lower cost subsidiary subsidiary take over NZ mainline routes. Bit of a slap in the face by NZ as well just quietly - they manage to get the pilots to drop their action and mediate further, then on the same day announce this!!
Cheers.
