Fairchild 328Jet V. Avro 85

Fri Jul 12, 2002 2:12 pm

I have flown on a Mesaba Avro and I loved it even though I do not like regional jets. As a matter of fact I purposely avoid them. I am leary about flying the Fairchild 328Jet, but I was wondering if it was similiar to the Avro? Can somebody provide some comparative insight?

I have flown on both.

I have flown the RJ-85 with Mesaba several times, the 328Jet (FRJ) just once on DCA-GRR-MKE. The FRJ was quite comfortable, but legroom was lacking. As Skyway has leather seats and meal service, that was a plus. RJ-85 with Mesaba wins for seat width and legroom. The FRJ is quite spacious inside with good headroom, yet it is still more cramped than the RJ-85. The -85 just feels more like a larger airliner on the inside.

That's what I was thinking. How does it feel in terms of power and the actual flight of the aircraft?

The FRJ fishtails in the back; it is able to be felt.

Power and actual flight, couldn't tell you. An airline flight is an airline flight is an airline flight. Neither has thrust reversers, so landing I recall as being fun on the FRJ.

I flew on the Fairchild last January and also the Avro last January and last weekend.

The FRJ is probably the widest 3-across cabin out there. If you can get a seat A (the aisle and window), you're set. I wouldn't worry about the FRJ if you've already been in an ERJ.

The Avro is pretty much like any other narrowbody airliner since it's 5 across. Think DC-9. But if you want to be able to see out sit in the far back.

I was on an FRJ last week. It's a great jet. If you can get any of the front seats, do it. I'm 6'4" and was able to cross my legs in seat 2A (front row, pilots side of plane). I had heard that it climbs like a homesick angel...and it it does. It was remarkably quiet, even with the engines hanging off the wing just behind me. Very smooth flight. Compared to the CRJ I flew, the FRJ run rings around it, from a passenger standpoint. From the front I didn't notice any "fishtailing", although I did notice a bit of yaw in the CRJ. Take the FRJ if you get the chance. You might be pleasantly surprised.
