Anyone Ever Fly Just For The Heck Of It?

Sun Jul 14, 2002 10:33 am

Just wondering...it sounds ridiculous and crazy to an average person, but has anyone just bought a plane ticket and taken a trip just for the sake of flying and passing thru different airports?

I know lots of kids do it 'cause mom or dad works for the airline....but has anyone done it when you have to pay for it? I guess it would work better on a discount one-way type of airline like WN or AT, and especially if you get on a flight that has 3 stops. Like, you'd spend your vacation by buying tickets to make a "loop" and spend a day or so in each city?

Like I said, it IS a crazy idea.

When vacationing in St Marteen.. I decided to fly Winair to Saba just for the heck of it. I read about Saba having on of the shortest runways in the world, and I just wanted the experience of takeoff and landing.. the rt airfare was $69 US so i figured what the heck... I was there and back in a few hours.

The last time I flew just for the sake of flying... no frequent flyer point accrual involved either.... was last March. My father had an award ticket on Midwest Express that was expiring and he wasn't going to travel on them soon so the account would go inactive (I know, I know, he should have gotten a magazine subscription or something to ping the account). I flew OMA-MKE-DCA-GRR-MKE-OMA in one day, basically being fed by YX all day long. The purpose of the routing was to fly on the FRJ (DCA-GRR-MKE).

Several people on this board specialize in doing "mileage runs." Though I never have, I look forward to doing so in the very near future...

When I was younger and single I used to do it all the time. Before airline deregulation here in the US in 1979 (or 78?), you could pay the same for walk up fares as for what you would pay for advance purchase tickets. Many times I would wake up on a weekend morning with nothing today and I would drive to SFO and look for an interesting flight. Most of the time I would head down to LAX or San Diego for the day. I would fly down, wander around the airport for awhile and fly back when I got bored. Also I have taken many flights to be able to fly on certain types of airliners. I did this with PSA and Air Cal Electras, PSA L1011, Golden Gate CV-580's and Dash 7's, Swift Aire DH Herons, etc.

I went to LAX for a day just to be able to see the airport and to fly on a DL 767-400 and MD-11. (Itinerary consisted of JAN-ATL-LAX-ATL-JAN, back when the MD-11 from NRT-LAX then flew from LAX-ATL.)

I got a Skymiles ticket though -- Shortly after September 11, Delta decided to, for a limited time, charge 15,000 miles for domestic round-trip coach instead of the usual 25,000, so it was an offer my dad couldn't pass up.  Big grin

Yea, but, I mostly try to get some training in when I'm on the Cessna's, as for airlines, I took a trip to ATL back in January with some people from this forum, it was fun, just too bad that the trip ended up in a bad way...

I used to fly from TUS to LAX or LAS just for the hell of it. I have flown from TUS to JFK just for fun also. Add in DAB-MIA and TUS-PHX numerous times. The list goes on.
The first killer was getting older and having a 9-5 job. I still flew the TUS-LAS/LAX flights on a lark once a month until last September. It's just not worth the time anymore. I miss it.

My dad is a US Airways captain, so when I go to his house in Charlotte, I regularly spend time flying US Airways Express turboprops around the region. Lots of fun, and its great because I get to spend time in aircraft that won't be used by the US majors fro many more years.

Matt, Why did you have to bring up January 26... That trip was total hell. Well, Read my trip report on 657.. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/20946/6/ Now Remember. I typed this a long time ago...

But anyway, Matt, You know how 1/26 was. Can we please not mention that anymore.  Sad

As mentioned above, I am one of the 2 who went with Matthc49 to ATL. I went to ATL again on June 10... Alone. I had much more fun because the Airport was much more active on a Monday, than it was on a Saturday.. Besides The plane I flew on back to GPT on June 10 had only completed 1 day of service. (2 Days as of June 10)

Ok, I haven't heard the stories about the "trip from hell" but I'll read the post...

I was considering the possibility of this as a trip idea. Yeah, I'm all grown up with a job and all but I still get a little time off  Big grin

Among my other ideas was a road trip to a couple good spotting airports - I like road trips!! But I haven't flown now in 18 months and would really like to take a flight. So I'm also thinking of "fly/drive" trips as well as a multi-stop plane trip.

I know that Southwest has many 3-stop flights....

When I was 12 - 15, and just a wee lad in Farmington, New Mexico, I used to save money from mowing lawns and working at the baseball park to fly on Aspen Airways/United Express. Either to DEN ($150 roundtrip) or to DRO ($30 roundtrip). The local agents at the airport used to call me their "little world traveler". I once bought a ticket on UAX to DRO, where I bought a tkt on HP to GJT, back to DRO on HP, and then down to FMN on UAX. Flew two BAe-146s, and 2 732s for all of 55 minutes of flying total.

I have spent the past 6 weeks flying around the US and to Asia just for the hell of it.

here is what I have done

PHX-ORD-LGA-EWR-DEN-PHX (777 first class)
PHX-ORD-ATL-IAD-DEN-PHX (777 Business class)
PHX-SFO-ORD-YYZ-ORD-PHX
PHX-DEN-SFO-PHX (747-400 First class)
PHX-SFO-JFK-EWR-DEN-PHX (777 first class)
PHX-LAX-ORD-HKG-NRT-SFO-LAX-PHX (747-400 Upper deck each segement)

Now mind you my mother works with United so I can actually do trips like this without being a multimillionaire or having a nice BMW with special interior!

Cheers!

I used to fly to LGA for the day but haven't done that in a while. I am also a few miles short of status on United so I'll be taking a 3000+ trip to SFO next month (to hang out with a few A.net members for the weekend) to take care of that little problem. I'm also planning a nice little mileage run to SIN to up my miles for next year.

I fly every week, usually 3 or 4 round trips, and they are all just to fly. I'm taking NW on Monday to msp then to lax to fly on a DC10. It's great, good thing I don't have to pay!  Big grin

Kaitakfan,

The question was about people who PAID for their tickets.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

We had another thread on this about a month ago.

I have done cbr-syd-bne-syd-cbr once last year. It was designed to be cbr-syd on Kendell CRJ, syd-bne on QF 747SP (the reason for the trip), then bne-cbr on QFlink 146-200. As it turned out, only the Kendell flight eventuated. The 747SP was changed to a 747-200  Sad which was so late I missed the BNE-CBR flight but as a good consolation I scored a 2 sector return - back to Sydney on a Qantas 767-300 then an Eastern Dash-8-300, which happened to be my first flight on this type.

Earlier this year, I did CBR-MEL-CBR on Virgin 737-700s and have a SYD-BNE-SYD planned on Virgin in late August.

But the cream comes in just over a week:
CBR-MEL QF 733
MEL-WLG PH 738
WLG-SYD FJ 73G
SYD-NTL QFlink BEH (Impulse)
NTL-CFS-BNE QFLink DH8
BNE-CBR QFlink 146-200 (Southern)

All in 2 days (6 hours overnight in WLG)

Like, you'd spend your vacation by buying tickets to make a "loop" and spend a day or so in each city? I have thought about doing an around Australia trip like that. I might still do it one day, not out of the question! I would be paying for it all myself but it would be one way of seeing the country and visiting cities and airports that I have not yet been to! The planning of it would be fun in itself!

If flying for the sake of spotting and trying out airlines I wouldn't normally use also count in this thread, then I've done a couple of "fun flights" recently, e.g.

ORY-NCE-ORY (first time on AirLib)
BCN-MAD-BCN

I'll add

ORY-GVA-ORY (first time on EZY)
and two
DUS-MUC-DUS (first time on dba)

day trips this July and August.

 Big thumbs up

I had a free ticket on WN that was about to expire so I just used to go from DAL to ABQ for a couple hours, then flew back.

I am doing this "just for fun" flights quite often. Mostly from DTM to FRA for spotting and to meet other a.net members there. In March this year I have flown with SW from FRA to LHR and back because I was very interested to fly with that airline. Last year I have flown from DUS to MXP on AZ because I wanted to fly on the ER4. My next spotting trip is:

July 26: DTM-FRA, July 27: FRA-CPH, July 27: CPH-ARN, July 28: ARN-FRA, July 28: FRA-DTM

Later in August I fly just for fun from DUS to MUC and TXL (only one hour between arrival and depature). DI had a great offer two weeks ago, for both flight I have paid 1 Euro + tax.

Back when I had Mom's unlimited TWA passes I flew all over. Back in 88 I flew an STL-LAX-BOS-JFK-SFO-STL routing just for the hell of it. Also went to ANC for an hour once. Numerous "there and back" flights, hitting states I hadn't been to yet. In April I flew STL-MDW-STL on WN just to see how the construction at MDW was progressing.

Last month, after having been grounded for 74 days - my longest time in almost 7 years - I took a daytrip YYZ-YVR-YYZ on JetsGo just to get back in the air again.
