Big Mess @ PHX Tonight

Mon Jul 15, 2002 2:26 pm

Phoenix, and I mean the entire metro area, got socked with a major storm tonight.

The news is reporting that Sky Harbor hasn't accepted an arrival since 8:15pm MST. There is significant damage on the ground, but the extent will not be known till the morning. Furthermore power is out in terminals 2 and 3 and partially out in terminal 4. It really sounds like quite a mess. So if your travel plans tomorrow involve Phoenix, or any airline with large ops in Phoenix, I would definately check ahead to make sure your plane is on time.

Don't know much about Scottsdale, but Channel 15 news reported that a peak gust of 78mph was recorded @ KDVT (Deer Valley).

There's also significant flooding in the Metro Phoenix Area. This won't affect ops at Sky Harbor too much, but the news did report the following:

Many airport roadway signs blown down and blocking major roads in and out of the airport.

Several General Aviation aircraft damaged, including one UA and two HP jets with some damage.

Many aircraft into PHX have diverted to LAS and TUS.

Over TWO INCHES of rain on the ground in an hour; this, in a place that averages under 8 inches of rain a year.

My friend's dad got stuck there.

His DL JFK-SAN flight made a stop there. Is this technical stop routine?

The wind gusts spun an America West 757 and two Airbuses around while parked at the gates, causing severe damage to the aircraft, jetways and ground equipment. Also there are reports on damage to a United 737, two Southwest 737s and two Continental 737s. The north runway was littered with debris, flipped baggage carts as well as baggage. Many trees are uprooted crossing the roadways at Sky Harbor. Even a old sink and toilet seat were lying the entrance ramp. One thing is for sure, this Monday (7/15)will not be a smooth one in Phoenix.

The morning news shows had tons of footage. The worst damage appeared to be to the west end of the airport. The east economy lot had a lot of damage. The Swift ramp is a mess and there are some small planes flipped over. The North runway will be closed at least through this morning due to debris on the runway. Also, the tower was saying that they estimated winds to 90 MPH.
I can tell you that I was driving south on I-17 to the Loop 101 East to Scottsdale at about the time of that big gust at Deer Valley and I have NEVER driven through such an intense storm, and I'm a 36 year old east coast guy who has seen a good number of doozies. That wasn't just a gust at Deer Valley either, it was sustained like that. It looked like hurricane footage on the Weather Channel, just unreal!

Another view from the local news helicopters showed several USPS "igloos" that flew from the Air Cargo facility into a long-term parking lot, damaging several vehicles. One such igloo traveled around 150 yards in the air over several six-foot razor wire fences before coming to rest in the lot.

Also, what appeared to be a Kitty Hawk B-727 was pushed backwards across the ramp into a utility pole.

Its was a biiiig mess. I was just down there yesterday, looking at an old mooney that has been sitting at GA for many years, and this morning that same mooney is upside down on the ramp. I am thinking of going down today to take some photos of the damage.

For anyone interested, Scottsdale airport seemed to be in good shape after the storm. I was flying out of SDL early this morning. The only thing I noticed was the planes and surrounding areas completely filthy after the storm last night. Besides dirty planes, SDL was lucky, unless there was something I missed. By the way, When I was driving home on north Scottsdale road last night, the storm hit so hard I had to pull over. I could hardly make out the cars infront of me. Never been in a storm like that here in AZ before!

Cheers!

Even though this thread is pretty old, I thought I would mention to anyone interested in the PHX area that if you head on down to Deer Valley (KDVT) and look in the area where Westwind Aviation keeps there aircraft, there is a Cessna Grand Caravan that was apperantly tossed all the way down the ramp during the storm. (That was what the Westwind dispatcher told me). It has half of the right wing dangling in the wind (seriously, it is hanging on by just a peice of metal, and it blows around in the wind,) The vertical stabilizer is sheared off, the prop is bent, the left wing is bent down so it is about 5 feet above the ground, the whole aircraft is leaning to the left, and almost every window, including the windscreen, is broken.

I wsa just down there taking photos of it and I will be uploading them in a few days. If your bored and you want to see something interesting, go see that caravan. I just wish I was there during the storm to see it tumble all the way down the airport! Im glad im not the guy who forgot to tie it down. (thats exaclty what happened.)
