Woo Hoo...that Pittsburgh news is about time. It was well over due for us to get some, well ANY, western service from another carrier other than US. It was either gonna be AWA to PHX or Frontier or UAL to DEN. We have AirTran for the east (even tho they lost hope for PIT as a focus city...PIT-MDW should have been kept), Vanguard for the Mid-West, and AWA for the West.

medford and bilings are interesting, as both are rather, shall we say, unacustomed to mainline service. Wonder if there is actualy enough traffic from these cities. Also wonder what will happend to the more independent regional flying to these cities (Horizon, Big Sky)

Medford and BIllings are Rj service by Mesa. However, Billings sees tons of mainline service (well it did before 9-11) Delta flew MD-90s in from SLC, United had 737s to DEN and NW flew DC-9s to MSP. I think AWA will do well in BIL.

Medford currently receives UA 737 service.

AWX is continuing the strategy that has been pursued quite well in California, provide an alternative connecting hub for secondary cities. Combined with AWA's new lower fare structure, Medford and Billings could both see an uptick in passenger counts.

I just returned from HSV via DL through Billings (basically the major airport in my area) and was so happy to hear the news! For those of you that think BIL does not have a lot of service, take notice to what they get:

Passenger:
----------
Delta: MD-90s (SLC)
SkyWest (Delta Connection): CRJ-200s (SLC)
United: 737-300s (DEN)
Air Wisconsin (United Express): BAe 146-100s (DEN)
Horizon: F-28-4000s (SEA)
Northwest: DC-9-30s, -40s, -50s (MSP, GTF, FCA)
Big Sky: Metro IIIs and 23s (GQ's mega hub, basically a whole lot of destinations)

New Service beginning October 27:
America West: CRJ-200s (PHX)

Cargo:
-----
Ameriflight: assortment of turboprops
Corporate Air: assortment of turboprops
UPS: 757-200s (SWF, DEN, etc..)
Airborne Express: DC-9s (ILN, GTF, etc..)
FedEx: Fokker F-27 (unknown destinations)
Great Lakes Airlines Cargo: B1900Ds (MSO, DEN)

And BIL gets lots of GA traffic from anything from a Citation to a GV to a 757 and occasional large charters (Sierra Pacific 737-200s usually) for firefighters.

I'm going to try and get on the inagural flight between BIL and PHX on October 27th. Currently its quoted as only $283 r/t on americawest.com for departing on the 27th and returning on the 28th!

This PIT service is great! However, I know first hand from experience that HP doesn't exactly price out its low yield fares on the consistency that Frontier, WN and Air Tran do. So how well this route will do should be interesting. But after all the low fare seats go and they are charging comparable US fares...I wonder who will choose what.

Is the start of these RJ flights timed with the delivery of their new CRJ700 deliveries, allowing Mesa to start these flights with the CRJ200s, or are they diverting these aircraft from other routes? Thanks and best of luck to HP.

I made a post here (http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/883843/) about the email I received when I contacted HP regarding whether they would use -200s or -700s on the Medford and Billings routes....
