AA 777s Between DFW & Lax?

Wed Jul 17, 2002 6:12 am

I'm trying to plan a trip to Dallas in September, and when I did a search for flights on the aa.com website, I found these two flights:

#2446 LAX-DFW
Depart 1:16p
Arrive 6:17p
Equipment: 777

#2409 DFW-LAX
Depart 9:29a
Arrive 10:37a

AA is not known for flying 777s domestically between non-hub US cities (MIA-LAX is the only one I can think of -- LAX is not a hub). I'm surprised (but happy) that they are going to fly the 777 on the DFW-LAX route. Is this a temporary move, or will the widebody be around for a while on this route?

I've enjoyed United's 777 service from LAX-DEN, and I'll definitely choose the 777 to Dallas if available.

The flight number looks like a code share......

Nope. These flights are listed as "operated by American Airlines". In addition, I'm fairly certain regular AA flight #'s go up through the 2000's.

AA flies 777s from LAX to LHR and soon NRT, so the DFW-LAX flights might just be repositioning flights, like how UA flies LAX-ORD with 744s sometimes.

Hawkeye2 is probably right, AA does need to move its 777s around for utilization and maintenance purposes, so flying the 777 between LAX and DFW makes sense for one flight per day.

Also, LAX is a huge destination out of the DFW hub, and AA may simply need the seats at the peak times that the mentioned flights will operate.

AA also operates the 777 on DFW-ORD routes once a day I think.

It may be for positioning purposes, although LAX-NRT isn't supposed to start until March or April of next year. All I know is that it beats taking an MD-80 to DFW.

Flyingbronco05-

AA in a way has fifth freedom rights for the DFW-ORD 777 as that flight number and aircraft continue to LHR. The official routing of the route is DFW-ORD-LHR, as it is all under one flight number. The reverse(LHR-ORD-DFW) is the same too. However, AA can pick up and drop off pax at ORD though.

As far as I know, pretty much all of AA's 777 domestic flights are repositioning, or routes with 2 legs, which the first or second leg is longhaul.

As I mentioned, DFW-ORD-LHR and LHR-ORD-DFW are perfect examples of this. I know AA flies 777s between DFW and MIA. Those go onto S. America. A weird thing is that DFW operates DFW-MIA-MAD flight#68 (correction?). The MIA-MAD leg is operated by a 763, but the DFW-MIA leg is flown by a 757.

In addition to the DFW-ORD 777, AA #999 is a 777 that goes LAX-MIA-GRU

However, it looks like the new LAX-DFW flight is not a continuation to anywhere. I don't see any continuation on AA's electronic timetable, and it arrives in DFW too late to go to Europe or Latin America. (it could possibly do a later night Latin America run, but I don't see anything like that in the schedule).

In addition, the plane arrives in LA from DFW much too early to do the LHR run.

Oh well, I'm going to book it and hope for the best (that there is no equipment change).

Travelin Man- When the 777 arrives in DFW, it could be doing the SCL run. I have my doubts though as they would probably let the 777 assigned to SCL rest a little more.

SCL run in no longer done by a 777 it has been downgraded to a 763 in favor of the 777 running MIA-SCL

They also fly the 777 DFW-MIA, then on to Buenos Aires.

Don't bet on the 777... It might not be one when September rolls around.

BTW, Japanguy, AA flight numbers are 1-2599 for AA metal, 2600-3199 for TW metal and 3200-5999 for American Eagle. The 2400 flight number will tell you that the flight is scheduled as a DFW-LAX or DFW-SJC trip out of/into the B Terminal at DFW.

It appears that this is a pure utilization flying route, similar to how CO and DL have put their 777 and M11 respectively on LAX runs for a couple months at a time. LAX is a market which can support the extra capacity nicely, which an international market may not always be able to do, especially in the lean times around September-October.
