Thu Jul 18, 2002 6:54 am

Any news.

Well, seeing that Aeromexico ordered the 777 (similar cockpit to 737NG), I'm guessing that they'll go Boeing. Also, don't forget about NAFTA. Seeing that the USA gives lots of aid to Mexico, there will probably be political pressure on Aeromexico to order Boeing.

Rumors are that Boeing will get this order, with Aeromexico getting a mix of 73G and 738 aircraft, but no 717s as originally expected. Still nothing confirmed. I heard that Airbus was really trying hard, but AM seemed more interested in the Boeing products......we should know shortly.

Wait, my mistake. Had a long day at work. I heard a while ago that Aeromexico was looking into the 777, they didn't actually order it.

I still think that the order will go to Boeing due to politics though.

I don't see any political pressure to order either airbus or boeing.

I have posted this before, but in April of this year I asked an AM Captain and MD-80 check airman about Am's (and his own) preference for fleet replacement. His answer was pretty similar to EGFF's: we will order from whoever comes up with the best deal, as the bottom line is both manufacturers produce top notch machines that are extremely efficient so the choice really comes down to price.

What happend with the AF 777´s that were going to be leased to AM for the summer, it was supposed to be 2 777 for flights to CDG or MAD.

Politics might influence the decision.......but AM has never operated an airbus plane, they have traditionally been MDD up untill AM introduced the 757's and 767's.....of course introducing a new manufacturer in to your operations is not that big of a problem as we can see in the MX case.....they went from Boeing-Fokker to Boeing-Fokker-Airbus.

Still it would be great to see a 777 in AM's colors and 330/340 on MX's colors.

In my opinion, I believe that this is not a politicized issue. The United States government does not just hand out free rations of money to Mexico. This is not an EL AL/Israel case. The U.S. does provide Mexico with assistance and funding in certain issues such as the drug war, but Mexico's economy is pretty much dependent on how well the economy of the United States is doing. If the U.S. economy catches a cold; Mexico catches the flu, so therefore it important for the Mexican economy to have a robust American economy. However, AeroMexico's best interest is to get the best price per plane, and it is the job of each aircraft manufacturer to bid and offer the most competitive deal to win the order.

AeroMexico has been traditionally a loyal Boeing/Douglas customer, but business is business and what matters is the bottom line. There has been strong rumors that suggest that one of the reasons why AeroMexico is more inclined to Boeing has to do with influece from its close partner Delta Airlines, who might just one day (in the not too distant future) be the owner of AeroMexico.

As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, The owner of AEROMEXICO is exactly the same as MEXICANA, meaning the CINTRA group.

CINTRA group owned also regional AEROCARIBE and AEROLITORAL

Therefore, MEXICANA being an almost totally AIRBUS client should mean something. Some time ago there was some discussion about what kind of equipment the CINTRA group would choose for their regional companies.

Somebody from Mexico please correct me, because this information is somehow old.
