ATCers, What Do Dislike?

Sat Jul 20, 2002 3:53 am

Air (and ground) Traffic Controllers:

What things do pilots do that annoy you or piss you off? Do you have any stories where you were ready to run out to his plane and beat the snot out of a pilot?

We have all kinds of FA threads asking this but I've never seen one for ATC, so here we go!

I'm not a controller, but I was watching planes and listening to my scanner shortly after DFW opened up. That was in the days of CB Radios and there was a private pilot who had no concept of where he was or where he was going. He responded to ATC with terms like "10-4 good Buddy" and when told that traffic was a Braniff 727 at two o'clock and five miles responded with "Negatori on that". They pretty much halted all traffic out of DFW while this fool passed thru the airspace. It was kind of funny listening to the controller asking if he had DFW in sight. After yet another "negatori good buddy" reply, the controller finally asked him if he saw a long piece of concrete with a 17 on one end and a 35 on the other. When the idiot finally answered "10-4 good buddy", the controller responded with "Good. That's the worlds largest airport" and vectored him towards Meachum Field. The guy spotted the Naval Air Station and said he'd just land there. The controller told him "NO, you won't". They didn't even have him change frequencies, they just cleared him to land at Meachum and said that there would be someone from the FAA there to "discuss" the incident with him. Sure wish I could have been a party to that conversation!

When I'm flying into a familiar airport i hate waiting for landing clearence because some bozo is talking to the tower and doesnt know the runways, or where he is or where the airport is from him. I hate this. They should plan better. But then sometimes I'm that person but I like to plan ahead so I'm not that person.

I am not an ATC person either but I have a story to tell.
A friend of mine was traveling from BOS to SFO on United, and was listening to Channel 9, and heard a pilot of another aircraft saying something to the controller about the gates or something, which must have been pretty stupid because the controller answered: " Come back to me when you know what you are talking about"

"Come back to me when you know what you are talking about"

Listening to JFK live, I have heard this all but a few times myself.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

One day working at Beaver Tower (BVI), I had this dude that came in, and I instructed him to follow a Tomahawk on right base, he said he had the traffic in sight, he turns right in behind the Tomahawk, and it obiviously won't work, so I send him around to join right traffic, runway 10, and now he's going to follow a Cherokee on a 2 mile left base, and the same result happens, and it happened 2 more times...he even would get right on someone's rear end when I called his base...it was unbeliveable. So, finally he's clearly number 1 to the runway, and I said Cherokee so and so, "the whole god damn airport is all to yourself, you're cleared to land"...

There are certain expectations as an ATCer, you need to make snap seconds decisions to keep the traffic flowing expeditiously.

I hate snobbish pilots who think that we are sitting around in the tower and drinking coffee with nothing much to do. Pass silly remarks when we are busying co-ordinating for their last minute request when they are about to take off...

I know that being a pilot is not easy. But I hate those that think that they are God and the world revolves around them, because behind the silence in the air after every transmission, comes a whole bunch of co-ordination that they don't normally hear.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Beaver Tower! Man not many people no where that is! Anyways im from south of Pittsburgh, and if ya went through CCBC, my dad would have given ya your license and Paul Arnholt would have been the head of the program hehe. I am looking at going to CCBC, but probably for Commercial piloting instead of ATCT, the flying (as in piloting) bug has bitten me badly! Hehe, anyways Have a good day and contact PIT tower on 119.1!
