Direct Flight From RDU To London?

Sun Jul 21, 2002 3:17 am

I'm currently watching the British Open, and they've talked Swedish golfer Karl Petterson, who plays on the European Tour, but lives in North Carolina. He said it isn't a big deal, since there is a direct flight from Raliegh to London.
What airline has this, and how does it get to London? I'm thinking USAirways, but I'm guessing that would be from Charlotte. If it is American, where does it stop, and what jet is it?

American has been operating RDU-LGW flights for some time now. Raleigh/Durham used to be a hub for American Airlines until around 1993, along with Nashville. At one time, there was talk of a BNA-LGW flight as well. American also used to operate RDU-ORY flights, with a 767-200ER. That flight was dropped a long time ago.

American uses a 777 on the service in high season, and a 767-300ER in low season on the RDU-LGW route.

Those flights are known as the 'glaxo shuttle', after one of the pharmecutical companies that has a very close relationship with a British company.
