I've actually heard a large porition of the A380 flights will be based out of Greensboro, NC at the hub that is currently under construction. If so, then I believe they would definately be considering the A380 when they go to lay taxiways and all. Also heard they're considering extending 5/23 or making the new runway 14,000ft long to accomodate these aircraft. Anybody know anything about the A380 situation and Greensboro?

It would seem to me that it would not matter if the hub was A380-ready if the airports FedEx needs to serve from the hub are not A380-ready. Just my thoughts.
north dakota sucks.

Flyf15.....

All I know is what I;ve read in the HP Enterprise, W-S Journal and Greensboro News and Record who all three have quotes from FedEx officials saying that part of the A380 fleet will be based in GSO for European operations.

As for GSO, the taxiways can handle widebodies in military freighters, 747s, A300s and L10s, but can it handle the A380?

Also, there is some construction going on in Greensboro that I am now certain the purpose for. And this is not for the crosswind extension or new taxiways.

I skeptical the A380 will even happen.

I think MEM is pretty much ready to handle the A380, the only thing being that they need to mark off parking areas big enough to handle the A380 and also buy the cargo loading/unloading equipment that can reach the upper cargo deck.

There's no rush to do so since the first A380 for FedEx won't arrive until 2008!

MEM will be the last of Fedex' worries. Fedex has so much clout with the airport & the city, that the MEM upgrades (if any) will happen in time.

The issue for Fedex may be less-willing airport authorities at some other A380-possible airports such as IND, EWR, MIA, LAX, or OAK, not to mention the off-shore airports.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I don't think OAK will be a major issue for A380F operations since FedEx won't be parking the plane at any of the passenger gates at that airport.  Smile FedEx does want to make sure the A380F can safely taxi on the ground at OAK, though.

I can confirm contruction is occuring at the far Northwestern corner of the MEM airport, the goal is to fit 3 A380s wingtip to wingtip...they are also lenthening and widening the 36L/18R runway for them
