“Cathay Pacific Plans Direct Cebu Flights To China

Mon Jul 22, 2002 9:53 pm

“Cathay Pacific Plans Direct Cebu Flights to China” (Asia Pulse) Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) is planning to have direct flights from Cebu to China, according to Lawrence Fong Yat Cheung, Cathay Cebu manager. According to him, China is a growing market. "It is growing in a very large scale compared to other markets," he noted. He said many Filipinos also trace their roots in China. Fong also said Cathay is bullish about international tourism and is also planning to add seven more aircraft to its fleet next year. The market is still growing, he said. Cathay will add to its fleet the Airbus A380. He said Cathay plans to fly the new plane directly to New York from Hong Kong. Cathay also flies regularly from Cebu to Hong Kong.

Not sure if this is true or not. Sounds very odd to me. Anyone hear anything?

Sounds strange to me that CX will fly Cebu to China direct. Quite an unexpected news.

Hi

If CX are going to start flying to China from other Asian cities do you think they will every operate a LHR-BJS or LHR-SHA service.
This would be great for people going to China from the UK. Currently if you have someone wanting to fly into BJS and out of SHA you end up selling seats on LH or AF as BA serve BJS but not SHA and VS service SHA and not BJS. CA do fly LON-BJS and I have sold seats from SHA-LHR via BJS but they keep changing the flight times of the SHA-BJS and they don't always connect.

Will the A380 have the range to fly HKG-NYC non-stop year-round? I was under the impression that it would not be able to operate such flights. Rather, I thought that Airbus held that peformance-range segment for the A345/346.

I'm not complaining! I'll be more than happy to see those super jumbos arrive here in the future.  Big thumbs up

But you know, it could be that they will replace the 744 of the HKG-YVR-JFK flight with an A380. Either way, it'll be great to see that plane come here.

N79969:

Yes, the A388 has enough range to fly nonstop between JFK and HKG with full payload.

----

My read is Mr. Fong doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. After all, Cathay has been flying nonstop flights between Cebu and China. Isn't Hong Kong an SAR of China?  Wink/being sarcastic Seriously, there is no way the Chinese government would allow Cathay, a remnant of British colonialism, to fly between a third nation and China proper directly.

From the mouth of Cebu manager??? He's only one small potato within the CX network. Honestly, news like that would have had came out from the Corporate Communications Dept or higher executives and not from a Country Manager. Also, currently not many flights from HKG-CEB and v.v. Where did he get that idea from?

I agree that is sounds very odd, and that the news, if true, should certainly come from the Corporate Communications Dept. But it could be simply a case of a station manager shooting his mouth off. After all, scuttlebutt does get its way around stations - but for an announcement of this magnitude, I have my doubts as to the accuracy.

Sounds odd to me as well. Does China mean HKG SAR or PRC? If it is PRC, shouldn't that be operated by Dragon Air instead?

Somehow, I have a feeling that when he means China, he means "Hong Kong, China".....

Assuming he really meant Hong Kong when he said China, what's so newzy about it then? Doesn't CX already have services between Cebu and Hong Kong?

According to him, China is a growing market
"It is growing in a very large scale compared to other markets,"

Err...aren't these motherhood statements? Something that everyone says nowadays?

Just spoke to the manager of the Airline planning department.

Well nobody there has heard anything about this.

Think people are getting confused about CX hoping to apply for mainland flights from HKG.
