YYZ Diversions Due To T-Storms

Tue Jul 23, 2002 8:05 am

YHM saw the following diversions today due to the thunderstorms that rolled through Toronto...

Three SSV A320s.
Two AC A321s.
One AC A320.
AC CRJ.

Did YXU, BUF, or YOW see any diversions?

HEHE Funny how the airbus's are the ones that did most of the diverting...Guess plastic and lightning don't mix well  Smile

Dam I was almost going to go to YHM today

Dripstick where did it all park as the east cargo apron is crowded?

What happened when we got hit did anything from here divert?

I also think its funny that it was almost all Airbus because YHM is mostly and boeing airport except the ICC A300 and the ABX DC-9

On the north side of the terminal apron there were 2 A320s and 2 A321s. One A320 parked on the east cargo apron and 2 on the UPS feeder ramp. The CRJ parked in Gate 5.

Made for a crowded apron with all those blue~tailed baby~boeings about. The smaller buses can't hold for very long over YYZ, although I hear they are good gliders!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Not necessarily because they are Airbuses, maybe they just arrived at the worst time / did not have enough fuel.

seems like a MIGHTY odd coincidence to me A380.

actually a BA 744 diverted to YOW as well.

The only oddity here is the tired, old and useless arguement about Airbus. Extra fuel is nice to have but it depends on where you arrive in the queue and is the airport (YYZ in this case) accepting arrivals? The only mighty coincidence I see here is that there are more Airbus aircraft in the air around YYZ and in Canada in general.

I agree Gate Keeper.

I wonder what percentage of YYZ's daily arrivals are Airbuses now. It's a matter of percentages. If anything gonna divert, chances are it's a bus.

Anyone know how many Airbus Narrow bodies arrive at YYZ on a typical weekday?

I don't think that anything was diverted to YXU as we got hit pretty bad also and almost at the exact same time. Too bad though, would of been nice to see some of those aircraft

Just arrived 1hr ago from YEG- YVR- YWG- YYZ pairing. Our A320 came in early but we had to wait for a gate about 20 mins on the ground, due to the backlog caused by weather delays. Nothing like sitting on your jumpseat staring at the galley wall and that 3 inch window covered with rain while your wool pants are gradually becoming part of your skin. Wouldn't trade this for the world though...

"I wonder what percentage of YYZ's daily arrivals are Airbuses now."
Oh, about NINTY-FIVE PERCENT!
Well, now that Gets Go, and CanJet are here, the percentages have shifted a little. I would guess somwhere around 85 to 90 % if I were a betting man.
I've seen numerous times where aircraft land here past 0100 hrs. Lastnight, for example, I saw a couple AC 320s on final for 24R around 0115. Guess those were the diverted.

That was quite a storm over Toronto last night. I actually was flying from DTW to YOW and experienced the storm first hand. The lightening was visible for nearly 30 minutes as we were cruising over lake Ontario at about midnight while on board NW flight 696. We of course experienced notable turbulance at times, but i couldnt help but notice one aircraft actually flying over the anvil heads during that time.

Yesterday night the ramp operations was stopped for about two hrs from 21:45 to 23:45. Many flts did not arrive 'til after midnight.

regarding the airbus ratio at YYZ, I would say most of them are airbuses. All major Canada carriers fly airbuses such as AC's 340, 330, 320, 319/ TS's 330, 310/ SV's 330, 320. Most regional flts are operated by A320s.
For a single route, frequency can be up to 12 flts a day. That's why most of the diverted are airbuses. Though, AC also flies 744s, 767s and a few 737s from ex-Canadi>n Pacific International.

BA 744 was diverted when the weather was most severe, and later BA 777 also arrived late. (As a result of late arrival, departure also delayed: ATD was 23:00 compared to STD was supposed to be 20:55)

Foreign airlines flying airbus into YYZ are as follow,
CX340
AF330/340
OLYMPIC 340
SATA 310

Those flying boeing :
KLM 744/743
BA744/777
AEROFLOT 767
MALEV 767
MARTINAIR 767/MD11
Lutfutsa 744
Korea 744

AC C-GIUF, C-FTJR, C-GTIY
CRJ C-FZAQ

Also your line "All major Canada carriers fly airbuses"

Thats a false statement considering Canada second biggest airline fleet wise flies all boeing.

On Sunday evening my crew loaded and pushed Air Canada flight 154, an A320 bound for Toronto from Edmonton at 1735. I heard later on, and checked the computer to confirm it, that 154 had diverted into YXU due to the weather in YYZ.

I dont think that any of the planes that diverted from DTW were buses that went to Toledo, they were mainly NW Dc-9s and Mesaba Saabs, I think a Spirit MD-80 too. Of course there were three 744s that diverted in the storms from the two different days and a DC-10 also.

Did anything divert at DTW last night with all those storms or not?

I wish I had gotten to see that BA 744  Sad I believe YOW also saw an AC 732 and 320 or 319 as there were two more aircraft parked away from the atb. I was driving through Toronto on the 401 last Thursday, on my way to Welland when the other big storm hit. The rain was coming down so hard that I had to pull off the road cause I couldn't see out the window more than 2m ahead of me. Embarrassment lol it took 2 hours to get through T.O, which is the same amount of time it had taken me to drive from Ottawa to Kingston earlier in the day.

I would think that some diversions from YYZ landed at YOW. When i arrived at YOW, it looked much busier then normal. In particular, i saw more Air Canada aircraft than usual. Unfortunately amongst the aircraft, there were no diversions from Europe  Insane

BA 777

Mon Jul 29, 2002 12:29 am

Was the weather bad at all in YYZ on Saturday? I don't think it was, but I saw a BA 777 depart YOW last night at around 2030. It might have just been a medical diversion or a fuel stop. It was heading west, but maybe it was heading to DTW or ORD instead of YYZ.

We had severe lake-effect fog all day at the Toronto waterfront due to a southerly wind. Not sure if this would stretch up to YYZ.
