Which U.S. Airport Has The Longest Runway?

Tue Jul 23, 2002 2:03 pm

Which U.S. airport has the longest runway?
(or other major airports around the world)

I was out spotting at JFK with some friends a couple of days ago.
I never realized JFK's runway 13/31 is 14752....
That's awfully long... isn't it?

Bobcat: You from New York? I believe it is JFK's RWY 13L/31R. I heard that it is the only civil airport in the U.S. that is used as an alternate when landing a space shuttle because of that runway. It's so long that they sometimes only use 12,000 feet of it for Southeastern departures while using the 4/22's for other traffic.

However, I think DIA is paving a 16,000ft runway pretty soon.

DFW's 17R is 13401' long and it, too, is an emergency alternate for the space shuttle. I think pretty much any US airport with a long enough runway is an alternate for the space shuttle.

Orlando Int'l Airport (MCO) also has an alternate landing runway for the shuttle.

Here's a real shuttle alternative...Amarillo, TX.

13502 x 300 ft. / 4115 x 91 m

Not the longest ever, but twice as wide!!

Yes, JFK is the longest, followed closely by Las Vegas. It will soon be Denver though as they are paving a 16,000ft long runway.

There are also more than a few military runways that are 15,000ft long, some of them 300ft wide.

Actually, some of the military runways are 400' wide. Some are painted 200' in the middle but 100' on each side...not bad overrun  Smile

Edwards AFB, with Rogers dry lake, certainly has the longest usable runway at something like 35,000' long and while people try and track the 'lines' it's easily 4 or 5000' wide.

Its not the longest, but should be mentioned since an emergency landing would be real easy because of lack of traffic.

Glasgow Industrial Airport (07MT) has a 13500 x 300 ft. runway with 1,000 feet overruns on both ends. Its basically not being used right now and is in the middle of nowhere in Montana. It used to be used for Boeing flight testing, I remember when I lived nearby, 777s used to fly over on approach.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The NASA shuttle landing facility in Florida has a 15,000*300 ft long rwy with a 1000 ft overrun on each side.

Has anyone here ever been to Area 51 "Groom Lake"? They are supposed to have a very long paved rwy. But I doubt that civilian aircraft are allowed to land there. Big grin

DIA's runway fast facts:

Denver International Airport has five runways - three north/south and two east/west runways, and has room for a total of 12 runways.
Each runway is 12,000 feet (3,640 meters) long and 150 feet (46 meters) wide.
A sixth runway is under construction and is scheduled to be completed in 2003. It will be 16,000 feet (4,853 meters) long.

I was going to say ORD's 32L but I think I will keep my mouth shut.

Las Vegas-McCarren's runway 7L/25R is 14,510 feet long by 150 feet wide. Not the longest, but pretty long!

What about the reef runway at HNL?, I thought that was close to 15,000ft
long as well. That is also an alternative landing strip for the Shuttle if
needed. White Sands Air Base in New Mexico has also been used for
Shuttle flights. Maybe some of you data hounds can find the lengths
for those...
