Help Me With My Aviation Essay!

Fri Oct 08, 1999 8:46 am

OK, I know this is kind of off topic (well, its still about commercial aviation so maybe not...!  ) I have to write an essay about aviation safety and first I have to start out about what an average person (which most of us aren't, at least when it comes to aviation!) think of aviation safety. Then I have to reveal shocking information about aviation safety that is reverse of what an average person thinks of aviation safety. For example, most people think trantula (a spider) is a horrible creature when in fact they are quite harmless. Get the idea? OK, anyone got an imput on what average people think of aviation safety and what is actually true abut it?? It would be much appreciated!!!

I hope you also ask that to the average people instead of only listening the opinions of the non average people.
School works have more scientific credibility when supported by REAL interviews with your target (average people).

This is to be a constructive advise, don't get me wrong.

Well, all I know is that most of people are afraid to fly because they think the plane will crash, but write on your essay that is way safer to fly than to drive a car, the accident risk is smaller. Hard to believe, eh?
Well, my english is not that good to explain this, but you can e-mail me and I will try to help you, ok?

Most people think that air travel is dangerous because once in a while, there is an air crash in the news and a lot of crashes (in the news) have no survivors. The crashes news comes from all over the world, but a small car accident won't usually be reported in foreign places. That's why air travel seems dangerous.

Here're some facts about how flying is safe in reality. Virgin Atlantic's website provides this stats.

You're 18 times safer flying than staying in yer house!!!

Let me put something into perspective for you. At Horizon Air we fly upwards of 500 flights a day with about 58 a/c in operation (a few of course are in Portland at any given time for maintenance). So, 500 flights a day for one airline and we're just a regioinal carrier. Now, count up all the airlines in the world and add up their flights per day....literally millions of passengers in a single day. And how many die?

Add those few words to your work : the only transportation that is safer than the plane is... the lift!
(Statistically proved!). Regards.

RE: Fear Of Flying

Sat Oct 09, 1999 12:15 am

I don't think it's correct to say that most people are afraid to fly. To the contrary, most people I talk to aren't afraid to fly. They don't think anything of it. I think the people who talk about flying more are the people who fear it - those types are usually the most vocal. Whenever my mother or aunt, both of whom are afraid of flying, brings the subject up, I tell them a few key things which I know will calm them down. For example, that flying is safer than driving, and that there are fewer aircraft accidents, of course, than car accidents. Plus I use reasoning. For most people, fear of flying is an issue of giving up control, rather than the idea that the plane itself will crash. So let's be cautious about saying most people are afraid to fly. The ones I've spoken to aren't, for the most part.
