"There's such a large ethnic population on the East Coast, especially New York. That Chinese diaspora will help underwrite air services to China. It's important in respect to China's need to expand the links with the more dynamic East Coast," said Peter Harbison, managing director at the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation.

China's WTO membership and increased tourism are expected to create more travellers between China and the USA.

"We're starting these flights because the market demanded it," said a Mr. Wang  Confused

The Air China plane would leave at 1400 on the days mentioned above and arrive at 1550 at JFK the same day. It will depart at 1730 from JFK and arrive at 1900 in Beijing the next day.

"Air China is considered somewhat as the chosen instrument of China, the de facto national carrier. They have a sort of mandate to fly to other key cities in the world. My feeling is it was a decision made more for political reasons than for commercial reasons," said Jim Eckes, managing director of the Hong Kong-based consulting agency Indoswiss Aviation.

"A lot of people in China right now have a right to pick a non-Chinese airline in international travel. And anybody who lives in Beijing knows the weaknesses of Air China," he said referring to service levels.

Airmale, Air China had been served New York before, but some years ago they decided to suspend the route.

Although Air China offers a direct route between PEK and JFK, I'm not very interested in it. Personally, I will choose a indirect flight which transit at Tokyo or Hong Kong though the flying time is longer. But for long haul flights, I concern much about the inflight entertainment. Compare with CX(flies by 744),UA (flies by 777, transit at NRT) and CO (flies by 777, transit at HKG, to EWR), both UA and CO use 777 which equipped with PTV and larger leg rooms. But for CA, there are no PTVs, and don't think the leg room will be large in economy class. What do you think?

I think the original post was factually wrong, CA served JFK via ANC some time ago. But now CA will have a nonstop service between PEK-JFK, I really consider it a stronger product than UA (2 stops + change of plane). Will the CA service use the Polar route? Will UA respond with a nonstop service of their own?

there is no way UNITED will respond with the same route, they already tried JFK-HKG and i dont think they will try this again.

it is only one stop to get to PEK on UNITED.LGA-ORD-PEK not two.

Good Good Good..those mainland Chinese in the East coast shd be served by The Chinese Carrier.....if you hv been on a CX flight out of JFK u'll see it's a hell for both the crew and those mainland China paxs, CX Cantonese and Mandarin speaking crew is useless while dealing with those pax with a different kind of dialect(it's even worst if there are more non Chinese speaking crew), and those paxs usually travel with lots of babies, some are not their own children, they just bring them back to China for those parents who can't leave their job in the States, and there is one funny thing...they love changing the diapers anywhere(their meal tables, their seats, and sometimes the Crew seats, except the wash rooms) anytime(the seat belt sign is on and even actually there's a turbulence) and leave the changed diapers anywhere they like(in front or under their seat, or lying on the wash room floor in stead of the waste bin), and the crew just trying so hard just to ask the paxs to do it discreetly. And the frequence of pax being caught by the crew for smoking inside the wash room and extra 'no smoking annoucement' during the flight is the most among other CX routes.
The flying time on CX JFK/YVR/HKG is just too long, and the transit paxs are not allowed to get off the plane in YVR is even worst. The IFE and the good inflight service will not help much as paxs are being kept on the plane for more than 18hrs, therefore the CA non-stop flight from JFK to PEK is really a good choice:shorter flying time and more Chinese origin crew with different dialect.

I agree with Agmyvr, although I like to spot planes, I hate to spend a lot of time on planes especially on trans Pacific routes; no matter how good the IFE and food are (and it rarely is), the only thing you want is to get the h--- out after 15+ hours in the same place. Time is essence.

A380, according to the US-based newspaper -- The China Press that Air China did has direct flights between New York and Beijing five or six years ago.

Also, they will use Polar route this time and that's for sure.
