SQ Reschedule Its HKG<>LAS Service

Sat Jul 27, 2002 2:50 am

I received the call from SQ Hongkong office, told that the flights that i booked (HKG<>LAS) is rescheduled as follow

HKG 2300 > LAS 2230, then return flight
LAS 0700 > HKG 1430(+1)

I am sure that the sector bet HKG & SIN also changed, but i didn't ask the staff.

looks like there's some plane allocation problem with SQ,

can anyone confirm what's up?

Original timetalbe indicates a 2145 landing at LAS and a 1300 landing at HKG.

Looks like you'll get a Megatop or a Celestar then. Oh dear.

FoilCat - ETOPS problem for the 777 due to a closure of the airport along the ETOPS route. This means that the SQ777s have been 'banned' from doing trans-pacific ETOPS flights. I'm not absolutely sure of the 777 having the honour of performing the inaugural flight, though fingers crossed.

Tsentsan, what do you mean by "closure of the airport along the ETOPS route"? Do you mean "closure of AN airport?"

And the new schedule seems odd, leaving Las Vegas at 0700. That is VERY early and they won't have feeder traffic into the flight. (eg from Salt Lake City, and other cities in the region)

Anyone has more info on this?

Could be also because SQ doesn't want 2 flights departing HKG for SIN at the same time. ie SFO-HKG-SIN and LAS-HKG-SIN.

Timing is better this way for many passengers too though it is an issue due to the connecting traffic factor, but I think SQ believes that connecting traffic may connect via SFO/LAX, and leave LAS for originating passengers.

From what I heard it's actually because of the "Timetable slots" problem in Hong Kong. That's why SIA head decided to delay the flight. But HK station will not be happy because they'd have to work till SQ10 departs, when before they'd only have to work till SQ2 departs!

I do not think there's anything to do with ETOPS, because SQ have accquired ETOPS180. Also there are no plans of changing aircrafts, I'd see if I can get more info.

As Tsentsan said there was a closure of an airport, one which made it possible for B777s with ETOPS of 120 to fly across the Pacific. I heard Korean was affected, so is ANA. Will ETOPS 180 be able to make it across the Pacific?

SPK, interesting, when did SQ aquired ETOPS180? Recently? The most recent I heard of was ETOPS120.

SQ's partners in Vegas don't have arrivals that early from anywhere, to be hoenst. United Express does fly a few flights into McCarran from Fresno and Palm Springs (3 flights / day) and the United feed would go into LAX/SFO....

LAS is a pure O/D point for SQ...

I was told that the main traffic will be O&D between LAS and HKG. Also, for those of you who aren't in the know, SQ-UA co-operation is almost non-existent at this point in time and will likely remain so for some time... so feed into LAS is not an issue at all.

Also, just to clarify, the airport in the Pacific that everyone is referring to is Midway Island. Boeing was "propping up" that airport to keep it open as a diversion point but in the end the local authorities decided to close it. The only users there were a small number of scientists, and the only airline to fly there was Aloha Air from HNL, 1x/week. Wasnt' worth the cost of keeping it open for commercial operations.

Yes I know that SQ and UA don't cooperate much (if at all) but aren't there a great deal of passengers who (out of their own will, if I may) fly UA or Delta or NW from say, Salt Lake City to LAX or SFO, then take SQ transpacific to Asia?

9V-SPK: Though I would like to have faith in your comments about ETOPS180, the statistics seem to point otherwise.

SQ to LAS is landing 45 minutes late and SQ from LAS to HKG is landing 1 hour and 30 minutes late.

That would suggest a change of aircraft however, the figures do seem extreme. The SIN - CDG journey only took 15 minutes longer with a Celestar compared to a Megatop.

Unless SIA plans to fly the Jubilee ER slower?

Intriguing.

I work in LAS and I was told by the agent who is training for SQ passenger service that it was Etops issue and some airports would be closed and this was why the flight arrival and departure times

Does SIA plan to announce its arrival into LAS with a big bang? Have they been advertising, putting up billboards etc etc? Will they have huge fireworks like they did when they first flew into New York and London?

Docpepz, inside T2 there's this huge ballon announcing the introduction of the service.... perhaps SQ might really do a big bang into the LAS, with perhaps... an fuel emergency? Touch Wood!!!

Singapore_air,

What do you mean by

"SQ to LAS is landing 45 minutes late and SQ from LAS to HKG is landing 1 hour and 30 minutes late."?

Mr_BA,

I mean originally it was meant to land at LAS at 2145 instead of 2230 and at HKG at 1300+1 instead of 1430+1

SQ B777s do not have 180 mins ETOPS clearance, only 120 mins. They have never had 180 mins ETOPS so to say so is misleading.

Midway has nothing to do with the vast majority of Vancouver ETOPS flights, it would though be relevant on ETOPS flights from Asia to destinations further south such as Honolulu. ETOPS suitable airports for Vancouver are much further North and consist of such places as Shemya, Adak, Cold Bay, Sapporo and a few in Russia whos names I could never hope to spell correctly. On very rare occasions when a southerly route is favourable Midway may come into the equation.
Etihad Girl, You're a great way to fly.
