Aeromexico finally took a decision and said that they will replace their ageing fleet of Dc-9's with leased 737-600. These will be received from this year till 2004. They will lease a total of 15.

LeoDF,

You mentioned that AM will be replacing the DC-9s with the 736, does this replacement program include the MD-80s/87s currently in Aeromexico's fleet ?

I hope to see some of these here at IAH soon. Frankly, I am getting a little bored with those 'Mad Dog 80s'.

Ohh.. Nobody wants the 737-600, but its good that Aeromexico choose it.. I´m sure they will look pretty good in Aeromexico´s colors.

When they are going to arrive? I think that orders like these take a lot of time direct from the Boeing.. maybe 2 years or so..

Cheers,

Hi Scotty,

I do indeed remember the character from BTF3.

My reference to 'Mad Dog' was to the 'MD' in MD-80. I have also heard the terms 'Mega Death' as well as 'Skid Buggies' for the MD-80 series.

Winglets?

Sat Jul 27, 2002 12:16 pm

Is there a possibility of Aeromexico fitting winglets on their new birds? Are winglets even an option on the 736? It seems to me that they are common on the 737-700 and -800 models. Winglets would certainly give their new birds an added touch.

Thomas Millard,

The order of the B737-600 is only for replacing the current 13 Dc9s flying. I think that 736 are only for Domestic routes.

I think that the 42 MD80s in AMX fleet are the one´s you will see in the next days at IAH I don´t know for how long.....  Sad .

BWIA 772,
The total order is for 15 aircraft.

Copa737,

I think the first 736 arriving is in this year... probably NOV or DEC.

Hey Thomas !

I wouldn't be too worried, the DC-9s didn't fly to the US cause of the noise restrictions. So I'm sure you will see the 737-600 in the US on some routes.

I really can't believe the decision has been taken, it took ages !! but it isn't really surprising

Can't wait to see the 737-600 here in Tijuana, hope to work on one ASAP !

Yeap, perhaps I´m wrong but I don´t thing soo... those 736s will have almost the same capacity as the Dc9s plus another 20 so I think that´s more considered for domestic routes.

MD87s got around 135 pax
MD80s near 150 pax

Probably when AM stands to the point of getting rid of the MD80s maybe we shall see some 737-700 or 800s.....

SAS is apparently not very satisfied with their 736s. The fuelconsumption is too high for a brand new aircraft like that and the 736 is very sensitive when it comes to turbulence. This is due to the combination of a modest length, wide wings and a long tailfin.
I was recently on a SK flight between NCE and CPH performed by a 736. The aircraft was shaking so much during the entire flight for over 2 hrs. that it was impossible to eat or drink anything. When we were on the ground a crewmember confessed that this was not very uncommon for a 736. According to some sources SK is however very pleased with the 737-700 and 800-series.
But perhaps AMX still have a possibility to go for the A319 instead?

ARN is completely correct on SAS' experience with the 736.It is presently on the top of the SAS "transfer list" but so far no takers.Airbus proposed to take the 736's as part payment for additional A32x orders a few years ago but not anymore! As the operational expenses and flying qualities of the 736 became known, almost all orders for the type were changed to the 737-700 and the 737-800.In SAS,the -700 is just "so-so",while the -800 is in fact a money-maker.Unless Aeromexico/Boeing would consider leasing the 736's from SAS,it seems we will be stuck with these "piglets" forever.

Nop, the MD-87's and MD'80's will still be in the fleet, as a matter of fact, they are still receiving or recieved MD-87's not long ago. 737's are exclusively for DC-9's

Interesting choice and good for Boeing......the 736 will replace the DC9-30s still in service, and, hopefully AM will follow up with orders for the larger members of the 737NG family to replace, over time, the MD80s family aircraft. I think that AM will be very interested in the 738, which is a far more flexible aircraft than the MD80s, and operate transborder flights from MEX and other cities to just about any destination in the US, Canada and the northern half of South America.

As for the 736 not riding as well as other members of the 737NG family, these reports are far exagerated and the 736 does not handle much differently than the 735, or the "original 737-200", all of which have about the same length fuselage. SAS was not 100% satisfied with the 736's fuel economy, but it is well within the parameters set forth by Boeing.....it is not unusual for the smallest member of an aircraft family to have the "worst" fuel characteristics when analyzed on a fuel per seat basis.

Dutchjet has a good point. If the 737-600 operates so poorly and uneconomically, why does Boeing continue to market the product? SAS may not be 100% satisfied with the product, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad product. The 736 simply didn't meet their expectations.

While I agree the reports do sound too exagerated but the 736 does handle differently than the the 735 and 732 because of the wing design. The 737NG's have newer and better wings than the the 737 classics. Though the extra length of the 736 wing over the 735 and 732 does cause more instability in the 736 over its older counterparts.

737-200 Wingspan = 93ft
737-500 Wingspan = 94ft 9in
737-600 Wingspan = 112ft 7in

QuatarAirways mentions part of the problem re. wingspan. This problem is compounded by the fact that the yaw damper is far too slow in operation. This makes the 736 "wallow" in even the slightest turbulence.Boeing does not want to increase the damper sensitvity like they did on the 767-200,a plane which has a lot better ride in turb. than the 736.
As for the 736 ride characteristics they are not exaggerated. One example of how poor they are can be shown from the OSL-HAU route. When the route was served by DC-9's,there were up to 8 roundtrips per day with some 70 to 75% loads. Now,with the 736 there are only 4 roundtrips, passengers preferring to go to SVG or BGO instead, these cities being operated (mostly) by MD-80's.
There have been several critical letters to local newspapers re. the 736 with demands that SAS introduce the MD-80 on the route.

Well I hope the "bad riding through turbulence" comments are a little exagerated, because the skies over Mexico (specially central and north eastern) are not known for beign very smooth. A lot of bad weather usually.

Anyway, I heard today on the news that the order was actually for the -700 model, but I'm not one to rely on tv and radio news for this sort of information. Can anyone confirm?

There is a current story on bloomberg newswire that says they are BUYING 15
700'S, so I don't really know! I would post the link, but it is so long. You can go to bloomberg.com and type ba in the quote window and use the pull down menu and select company news and get the story.

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I went to MMMX for spotting, saw my friend from AeroMexico and he told me it was not a -600 order... it´s -700 series....

15 -700s + another 15 -800s.

They are going to get rid of 10 MD82s too. AMX is retireing a total of 23 aircraft.

I'm sure the decision to go with the 737ng was in no small part influenced by Skyteam partner Delta's significant fleet of 737ngs.

I forsee in the near future announcements on joint maintenance facilities, etc.

Anyway, I'm very happy for Aeromexico. This was a very smart move for them.
