Airlines in the year 2050 - POLL

Wed Dec 16, 1998 2:28 pm

As you would all know, in less than a century we have gone from strapping wood and cloth to our arms and jumping off a high place to supersonic airliners. What do you think will be the biggest change in commercial avaition if we could jump forward to the year 2050? A few global airlines? Double decker supersonic enviroment-friendly a.c? or back to the days of luxury flying ocean-liners?

I think it will be supersonic regional jets
like ANC-SAN SAN-SEA and there will
be supersonic global LAX-HNG. Some
will be small some will be big double
deckers. We will see.

I think we will see more luxury airliners and more double-deck airliners. I don't think there won't be that many supersonic aircraft.

I think the biggest change will not be in airliners. But I will be enjoying my retirement!! I will have flown for BA and retired for 12 years. I can not wait!
On the airplne part I will have flown them and I think it will not change to much just more models. Think of whet has changed since the 707 and the new 777 not to much. Fly by wire and EFIS and thats really about it.

Ya right! You will be enjoying retirement
while being a slave at my house while I
enjoy retirement!!!! You think you can
last in the airline industry 12 years?
I don't think I will survive 8 years!
Iain email me! I think airports in the
future won't beable to support jumbo
jets that's why supersonic will beat it!

Hey Toby
I will survive 38 years flying for BA. ANd I will only of left for 12 years. And no I will not be your slave I will my farm in Englang getting paid $150,000 for sitting around! I spoke to a buddy of mine about SNA he said he heard the were going over the 73 and 405 into the golf course and parking lot. ANd make a small internationl termianl and have flights to Japajn and OS and Europe that will be so cool if they do that. Also if that works out OCX will not be built.

Here in the USA, there will be only a few airlines that dominate the market. The little guys will be bought out or fold.

There might be another generation of 737's:
the 737-1000, 1100 and 1200 Series! Who knows?

I think there will be some SSTs, but 95% of the world's air traffic will still be on subsonic planes. The SSTs would be on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes, or other routes over mostly ocean.

The larger subsonics will probably be big flying-wing types that seat about 500 people. I don't think we'll ever see an airliner that seats more than about 550 people again. The smaller subsonics probaly won't look much different than the 737.

I think it is next to impossible to view 50 years in the future, but I can try to make some predictions.

-I hope that supersonic sub-orbital craft will at least start revolutionizing air travel by 2050. You could fly to anywhere in the world within 2 hours. The basic technology for this exists, but can they make it cost effective?

-Superjumbos will be around with the A3XX making its appearance sometime next decade. Boeing may respond years later with MD's Blended Wing Body aircraft that can carry 800 and is a revolutionary design that should be credited to solely to MD.

-I sincerely hope that we won't see another generation of 737's. It would be suicidal for Boeing to do that. They need something more revolutionary like their 7J7 project to become a reality. Boeing cannot survive in the narrowbody market by passing off more derivatives, they are already suffering in my opinion.
