How Is TU-204 Compared To 737s And 320s?

Sun Jul 28, 2002 3:47 pm

Hi,

For those of you who are familiar of Russian aircrafts, how well does the TU-204 compare to the 737 and the 320? I'm assuming that it's a lot cheaper than the Boeings and the Airbuses but performance wise, is it really a lot worse than 737/320? Like if there's a low cost airline starting up, would it make sense to use brand new TU-204s only (like the all-737 and all-320 fleets)?

Thanks!

Jimmy

It's 757/A321 sized, not 737/A320. Poor fuel economy has traditionally been a flaw of Russian airliners as compared to Western designs, although I'm sure the Tu-204 family is much better at that than previous generations, especially with the available RR RB211 engines. Manufacturer support has been cited as a current flaw, with the not so stable aerospace industry in the CIS.

The Tu-204 has a range (3700-4000km) that is shorter than that of all 737, A320, and 757 modifications, and an MTOW that is second only to the 757, at 109,000kg. Pax capacity roughly the same as 752, max cargo weight is 29000kg.

The Tu-204-200 (Tu-214) has a longer range ; also has the Tu-234 (shorter version): 9000km.

You have given the technical data; I give you my impressions as a passenger. For those interested I posted a long report with cocopit visit included on last year in July. It is comfortable, silent and as comfortable as a 752. it has full glass cockpit and as for the range, I have flown it from Moscow to Tenerife with full pax load. How many miles are that?

I think that the good folk at Siberia Airlines might take "offence" at you saying that they are not a major Russian airline.  Wink/being sarcastic

They are they second largest airline in Russia, behind Aeroflot, and it won't be too long before they will be the number 1 airline on domestic routes (if their route planning is to take effect how they are wanting to do it).

Also, in the overall scheme of things, KrasAir would also be a "major" Russian airline.

Also, Dalavia has the Tu-214, not the Tu-204, and Rossiya is also getting 2 of the Tu-214s which were meant to go to Dalavia.

You're right! I wanted to precise that no Russian airline, including major airlines, have a large fleet of Tu-204/214.

Yes, and about Sibir, they're leasing 2 A320...!

But, I find the Tu-204/214 great looking airplanes, especially the Tu-204 in Sibir Airlines, that's a simple, and classy colourscheme.

But what has happened to all the Tu-204 Vnukovo airlines had? Were they grounded and the'yre now sitting idle? Or have they found their way with other russian airlines?

Regards,

Benjamin

It is my understanding...someone please correct me if I am wrong...that a number of their Tu-204s are sitting idle at Vnukovo Airport, and frankly from photos I have seen they don't look like they are in too good a state. As to ownership, well basically, they would now be owned by Siberia Airlines after their takeover of V5 (I wouldn't be surprised if these were bought before the total closure of Vnukovo Airlines for like US$10,000...like the Il-86).

btw, as you are well informed about Russian airlines, I wondered if Baikal Al was still alive. I flew with them in 97 but then they went bankrupt?
