B727 On Order

Mon Jul 29, 2002 7:29 pm

Hi guys
I need some help with this one.
This morning when I came to work I read the new issue of ATW, and inte the ATW world airline report, i read in the fleet section that PanAm has a fleet of 7 B727 and 24 B727 on order???
I checked back a couple of pages to the fleet summary for 2001 in the section were it was stated what kind of aircraft that was on order and it read: B 727 24.
My question is, does Boeing still build the 727 or is it a typo or a retrofit or what. And is the airline "the old Pan Am" or is it something new?

Yes
I figuerd as much. But what about the 24 727 on order. I thougt the B 727 dident meet up to cat 3 in noise restrictions. And still more is it Pan Am or something new called Pan Am. And when I mean the old Pan Am i am refering to the airline that went out of business after the explosion over Scotland.

The 727's were bought from United Airlines, all 727-222's. The "Pan Am" is the third version that serves mostly alternative airports. Unlike the great, original Pan Am, this one has no first class cabin. They are based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The current owner is Guilford Transportation, owned by banking executive Timothy Mellon, if I remember correctly.

Simply put, someone lucked out by acquiring the trademark name and slapped it on their antiquated aircraft, hoping the storied name will save their operation.

To see their glamourous destinations and service visit their website: http://www.flypanam.com/

They are mostly on the East Coast and the Caribbean.

I went to SFB (Orlando-Sanford International) today and saw four of the ex-UAL 727's near Pan Am's hangars. I assume they were receiving the modifications to enter service with Pan Am and awaiting their new paint jobs.

Later,
Chris in Orlando
Change is: one airline, six continents!

Not all 24 727's will be put into service. Some were bought for parts needed to keep the others flying.
