When AA announced that they were returning the TWA 717s, Boeing asked AirTran if they were interested. They originally declined the aircraft because of the different galley arrangement. AirTran was wanting to kept a standardized fleet, but I guess they chucked that out when the leased the Pembroke birds, which have a different galley layout than the AirTran specs. AirTran's DC-9 fleet was (and is) a mix and match aircraft, each with different layouts. You have the ex-Delta DC-9s, the ex-British Midland ones, the ex-THY birds, the ex-Swissair birds, all with differing set ups. AirTran wanted originally to have a uniform fleet with respect to the 717, I guess things change.
