O&D Numbers - BDL Vs. MEM

Wed Jul 31, 2002 5:30 am

I recall reading here some time ago that BDL has higher O&D numbers than MEM. Now, I'll have to say I find that very very difficult to believe. Is there any site where I can find out O&D figures?

Actually, I believe it. MEM is primarily hub traffic, BDL is a broad market with lots of business and leisure traffic, with lots of low-fare airlines. Off the topic, I'd like to see NW start MEM-BDL flights, even with RJs.

BDL had 6,888,031 passengers in 2001, according to the Bradley site at http://www.bradleyairport.com/grow/traffic.shtml. Because BDL is not a hub, almost all but a handful of those pax were O&D traffic.

I found the following about MEM at http://www.regionalairservice.org/airports/index.php:

“Memphis is a hub without large levels of O&D traffic, it exists primarily to provide connections.”

However, I have not found O&D numbers yet. Anyone?

Boeing757/767: I can only think of two low-fares there, and that is WN & HP. Where are the rest of your 'lots'?

Detla Express. That's a lot of flights, not airlines, sorry.

If I'm correctly reading Table 2 at http://ostpxweb.dot.gov/aviation/aptcomp/aptcomp2001.htm

then in 2001 BDL had 6,303,520 O&D pax (in and out?) and MEM had 3,217,360.

Why is it so hard to believe? Hartford is a bigger city with 1,18M residents as opposed to Memphis' 1,13M, and has a bigger business market.

BDL competes with BOS, PVD and the New York airports in parts of its service area. I don't imagine that MEM has as much competition. This is especially true with respect to international flights. Most people living in BDL's vicinity will drive to BOS, JFK or EWR to get international flights, while people near MEM will use it and get connections.
Memphis probably is more of a tourist draw, what with Graceland and the nearby Mississippi casinos. There isn't much non-local tourism to Hartford or elsewhere in BDL's service area.
As far as business markets are concerned, I'll take your word for it that Hartford is bigger than Memphis right now, but the trends are definitely in Memphis' favor.

BDL has more than double the O&D has largly because of a better business region, more leisure travelers, and overall bigger metro areas.

Dont forget Hartford is under going a revitalization in downtown hartford. That should keep Hartford a large business center.
