AUS Is Bigger Than Sat?

Two medium sized airports only 58 NM apart, both serving central texas......which is busier? Berstrsom or San Antonio Int'l? Here are my statistics:

SAT

Aircraft based on the field: 253
Aircraft operations: average 541/day
Single engine airplanes: 136
Multi engine airplanes: 67
Jet airplanes: 45
Helicopters: 5
45% transient general aviation
31% air carriers
17% commuters
5% military
3% local general aviation


AUS

Aircraft based on the field: 190
Aircraft operations: average 599/day
Single engine airplanes: 76
Multi engine airplanes: 48
Jet airplanes: 22
Helicopters: 6
Military: 38
46% air carriers
36% transient general aviation
8% commuters
6% local general aviation
3% military


From this it would appear that AUS is significantly busier, especially in terms of air carriers, despite the fact that san antonio has a population nearly twice as large. I fly out of AUS regularly and it can get very hectic at peak hours, especially when 17L/35R was recently closed. San Antonio on the other hand is a bit easier since no matter where you are on the airport, it seems like you're always close to the end of a runway!

SAT does indeed have the population and the reputation as the favorite tourist city in Texas. However, I have seen Austin evolve into a very significant operation since my family first moved there in 1979. Austin definitely has had a boom since then. There are a lot of computer companies like Dell, IBM, and Apple in the metro area. The city has been discovered as an ideal place to live. Certainly, there is a lot of wealth there. Housing and rent costs are very high now. Sure, San Antonio has seen growth too, but it is nothing like what Austin has experienced.

One odd thing about the statistics is that SAT seems to beat Bergstrom as far as general aviation operations. I say this because bergstrom is pretty much the only airport in Austin for both general aviation and airline ops. Georgetown is the closest "busy" airport but it's still 30 miles away. In san antonio there are several GA reliever type airports, particularly stinson municipal, yet SAT handily defeats Bergstrom in terms of GA traffic.

I agree that Austin has grown more in the past decade than San Antonio. SA has grown maybe 10% since 1990 where with Austin it's been more like 25%. Still, I was surprised to find out that AUS had more commercial flights per day.

Oh I just checked my mail, and an ex-user saw this post and sent me these statistics:

SAT for 2001 had 236102 ops of all types with 71157 being air carrier
AUS for 2001 had 220439 ops of all types with 99872 being air carrier

I love Austin.

I hate San Antonio.

Seriously, I think some of the traffic is because of the dot-com explosion that we had around here, there was a lot people coming here for that reason, plus there are several Fortune 100 companies with large presences here. I know that in 2000, American was adding direct flights here left and right, and Vanguard came to town. In 2001 Frontier came to town. Southwest has a lot of direct flights from here too, I'm flying AUS-RDU direct in September and I have flown AUS-LAX and AUS-SAN direct in the past too, all on WN. I have had friends come down here from the Dallas area to fly WN places because the Wright amendment makes it difficult to go far from DAL, and Austin is the closest big airport to them.

Plus, everyone likes hanging out in Austin!  Big grin
Firings, if well done, are good for employee morale.

Austin grew by over 40% between 1990 and 2000. Austin's per capita income is now the highest in Texas and is the most economically affluent city in the state. Even though San Antonio is twice as large, Austin's population has the mobility to travel and the city garners far more business traffic.

I remember hearing from some friends at AA that the AUS/SAT flights were lovingly referred to as the "nerd bird" since the high number of techies that made that commute. I believe it.

Anyway, Austin is withering after the dot-com bubble burst... I'd be surprised to see any real new growth in the near future. All existing residential projects are pretty much left over from when the projects were proposed to investors in the late 90's.

Austin will become more affordable.

I love that city.

Both are currently hovering around 90-100 daily departures to approximately 30 nonstop destinations. AUS has Frontier. SAT has Midwest Express and Mexicana.

Here are the 2000 and 2001 passenger comparisons:

This is somewhat unrelated to the topic but since there are a lot of people from Austin here it seems like a good place to ask. My question is are there any specific times/days that AUS sees more military traffic? Also, is there any regular pattern to the military fighters departures/arrivals? Having spotted at AUS many times, I have seen 2 F-18s take off and an F-16 land, which was awesome and would like to see more if theres any schedule to it.

After another count of daily departures I need to make a correction to my earlier post. SAT sees approx. 124 daily scheduled departures (I had earlier written between 90-100).

Also, SAT has 27 "scheduled" destinations: ATL, AUS, BNA, BWI, CVG, DAL/DFW, DEN, DTW, ELP, EWR, HOU/IAH, HRL, LAS, LAX, MCI, MCO, MEM, MEX, MSP, MTY, ORD, PHX, RDU, SAN, SLC, STL, TPA. In addition, CUN and CZM are served by charter with Allegro and Champion.

I'd like to see IAD (UA), JFK (DL), MIA (AA), SFO (UA); AirTran (ATL) and US Airways (PHL) come back; and Frontier (DEN) and jetBlue (JFK) to discover SAT.

As for the military question, 90% or more of the military traffic at bergstrom is trainers. we get a lot of air force T-6's and T-38's. There is also a little bubble cockpitted air force trainer with really high pitched engines that I see often. I saw a navy training jet today but I don't know what kind it was.

When were you there, 1970's? THERE HASNT BEEN ANY ACTIVE T-6 in any services since then. LOL!

actually Rolex the AT-6 Texan II is the newest and Best JPATS prop trainer in the Air Force, it is replacing all T-37s in use. It was picked severeal years ago, and is used at Moody, Laughlin and Randolph with more UPT bases to come.

Regarding the military traffic.....I don't know if there is a better time than others or not. It seems to be pretty random. I've seen some pretty cool stuff with military at AUS. I've seen 2 T-38's take off next to each other a couple times and basically go straight up after lifting off the runway. I've also seen 2 T-37s do the same thing (well, without the nearly straight up part).

T-37's were quite common at AUS but they are being replaced by the T-6A. T-38's aren't as common as those, but they do show up on occasion. I've also seen a USAF C-32 and a USMC C-9. The trainers are by far the most common military at AUS and you can probably expect to see some type of military trainer most days of the week. I don't think there is any sort of schedule to this.

On a unrelated note.....while on a trip to San Antonio last week, I saw a C-17 flying over the Six Flags park (seen many C-5's and C-130's fly over but never a C-17). Sure wish I'd had my camera with, it was low enough where I probably could have got a decent shot.

Thanks for standing up for me on the T6 issue Lt-AWACS!!!!

I was wondering for a second about that.....hmmmm could Austin Ground really have been mistaken all those times during the past 6 months when, during taxi, they told warned me to "hold short of hotel, opposite direction T-6's" LOL!!! Not only do they fly in formation, they also like to taxi around the airport that way.

The t-37 is the high pitched whining jet I mentioned having seen earlier. I would categorize thoes as "common" at AUS. Even more common at AUS are the T-38's. I would say at least half of the time when I show up at austin aero on weekday afternoons there are a pair or more T-38's sitting out on the ramp. They do a lot of low approaches on the runways and sometimes do those straight climbing takeoffs that AUS_spotter mentioned! The T-38's are impressive!

As for the navy, T-45's are not too rare at AUS either. I've seen T-45's practicing appraoches at CLL as well.

PS: Lately I've been Seeing a Air National Guard C-130 off and on at the Austin Aero FBO. It is quite impressive also!!!!!!
