Honk If You Think The 757 Rocks

Wed Jul 31, 2002 2:03 pm

Sorry if this is one of the more useless posts of the day....but a noticable uptick of great Seven Five shots in the photo database had me thinkin this might be a good time to simply showcase what many of us believe is the hottest looking passenger carrying machine in the sky (with props to Concorde of course!).

Great heritage, great history, great safety record, great power, great comfort (in the hands of the right airline!).......here's to a great ship.

Here's the latest outstanding 757 snapshots. Feel free to add your favorites.

The 757 is just amazing! Great climb...great sound...great everything!

I've flown short flights (ATL-BNA/MSY, etc) and long flights (LAX-PIT, MCO-DEN, etc) on this bird and I love them every time.

And don't get me started on the 757-300....what a plane!

Steve in NO...still in awe every time I see a 757 climb out

I think the B757 is probably the best all around airplane existing today. Equally efficient on short turns as well as on longhaul transcontinental flights, the 757 is versatile, powerful, and built to last.

And one of the best looking airplanes out there. Check out some of my favorite shots.

I have 2 757 Models. Love the plane.

In JUST 5 weeks I'll be on an AA 757 from JFK-CUN. In 6 weeks I'll be on another AA 757 going home. Can't wait!!!! Expect a trip report.

Awesome aircraft.
I will never forget the first time I was on one.
I had heard they had power but man.....
As soon as we turned on the runway it was like a rocket ship.
I wasn't expecting it and was thrown back in my seat.....amazing, probably my greatest memory of a take off ever.

And the most beatiful landing I have ever seen is a Northwest 757

Plus, like DeltaSFO said, equally at home on shorth hops (like STL-IND) and transcons.

Probably my favorite plane, right up there with the 777. AA certainly has the best livery for it, with United as a close second, and ATA trailing in third.

According to the FAA databases there's been a couple of fairly heavy turbulence incidents recently involving 757s.

I'll bet they rocked then. Ho ho ho.

A few 757 tidbits

I was at Eastern when the 757 was introduced (early 1984); just before its introduction (December, 1983) a Boeing crew took Eastern's Board of Directors and senior officers and their wives on a non-stop flight from Miami to Buenos Aires and return. This flight meant that the 757 at that time would be the longest range airplane in Eastern's fleet.

It was not uncommon for a MIA-ATL flight to get to FL 410 en route.

Later, an ATA 757 operated the first RVSM flight across the North Atlantic, which is the first operational RVSM flight anywhere.

In doing an analysis on the 757 as a freighter, I found it could carry more than a DC-8-62 (in volume) farther with a much lower fuel burn and a 2 man crew. Working with Boeing analysts at the time, I believe that these discussions became the basis for the 757-200PF.

Incidentally, the shortest flight I have made on a 757 is BDL-PVD.

A very versatile airplane!!

I think the reasons why the 757-200 has been so successful are:

1. The plane has relatively low seat-mile costs in terms of fuel burn.

2. The plane's design is adept at flying everything from relatively short hops to transatlantic flights.

3. Because the plane is a bit overpowered for its weight, it has been a favorite of airlines that fly in and out of hot and high airports such as DEN, LAS, PHX, etc. Why did you think N7 bought the 752 as its primary airliner?

Broke:
I small correction--Eastern's first passenger flight with the 757 (and the first in the world) was on January 1, 1983 from Atlanta to Tampa. I was on that flight.

I agree that the 757 is beautiful and extemely powerful but it's high wing loading makes it quite rough riding in my opinion. There is also an excessive amount of ventialtion noise forward of the wing. As mentioned above, the cabin comfort is largely based on the airline's particular configuration. The Seven-Five got off to a pretty slow start but has since passed the 767 in sales. I betcha the 717 will follow suit!

I have flown a lot of times on the 752, it is a great aircraft in my opinion. A big advantage for airlines is that it is very flexible to use because it can fly on long and short routes, as a passenger I like the spacious and comfortable cabin very much.

I like the 757, even though I've only had the opportunity to fly on it four times. Very powerful plane... it gets up and out quickly.
This is not a good or bad thing, but I've noticed the 757 forward fuselage looks the least "Boeing" of all the Boeing products. To me, it has this "snub-nosed" or "low to the ground" look to it, compared to other Boeing planes. Why did Boeing design it like that?

Gotta love the looks of the seven-five, best looking plane out there IMO... Its great to fly on with its powerful takeoff/climb and sort of "rough ride" as well.

BEEP BEEP!!! I've loved the 757 since my first flight on it about 8 years ago. I really like the powerful takeoff & the "wine" of the engines. It's one of my 3 favorite planes (L10 & 727 the others)

I've probably been on at least 25 757s, flying them on DL (primarily CMH-ATL) US (most recent 757 flight- LAS-CLT in June) and once on NW (SNA-DTW).

If I become a pilot, the 757-200 is what I'd want to fly.

This is not a good or bad thing, but I've noticed the 757 forward fuselage looks the least "Boeing" of all the Boeing products. To me, it has this "snub-nosed" or "low to the ground" look to it, compared to other Boeing planes. Why did Boeing design it like that?

Although the 757 started out as an update of the 727 complete with 727 nose and T-tail, as the design progressed it was realized that greater commonality with the 767, then also under development, was the way to go. The "snub-nosed, low to the ground look" is a result of blending the 767 nose section onto the narrower fuselage. To accomplish this there is also a step-down from the cabin into the cockpit. This low nose combined with the long undercarriage legs gives the 757 it's distinct pteradactyl appearance.

I have never flown on a 707 but the 727 and 737 cabins are very nice. Last Saturday I flew on a 737-600 and I love it.

Gotta love the 757! I first flew her ORD-SEA (was supposed to be a UA DC-10 flight ,but was changed). I also flew N575UA and 579UA to and from LIH and LAX. You must really believe in those 2 P&W 's when over the Pacific!

YEah the 75 kicks ass big time, by far the most beautiful aircraft boeing made with the 727 right behind, and in terms of weight and balance it doesnt really care how you load her.

United fan...

I flew N579UA three weeks ago ORD-ANC. Comfy on the inside but the paintjob outside is fading badly. United's livery looks amazing fresh, but it turns from sharp corporate grey to a sort of milky white when faded.

Also, I could have sworn N579UA had a big splatter of dried bird....uhhhh, stuff.....clinging to the top of the #1 Engine pylon.

No photos in the database of N579UA. Arrrgh!

Coolest flight I ever had was on a Delta 757. Rocket! and quiet to boot. I wished Boeing had incorporated the "new nose" on the 737NG, now that would be interesting.

I remember listening to ch #9 trying to forget about my churning tummy from the LAX McDonalds (but that's another story) And the f/o asks the tower if we could wait to t/o because we're 600lb overweight!
I flew N595UA back-no pic's here, but I took a sweet pic of her as the sun came up over the terminal @ LAX. You can find it at www.planepics.net and search for 'kerhaert' it's on the 3rd page.

Also my 1st 757 was N567UA ORD-SEA

We very rarely get 757's at ROC. The last one was after 9/11 , an AA one was here for a few days along with a 738.But we did get AF2 with Al Gore during his campaign.Sorry I missed that one!
