Older Cabin Interiors For Southwests

Thu Aug 01, 2002 3:15 am

Hi again,

Does anyone remember what Southwest's seat/interior design looked like in the 1971-1984 period (prior to intro of 737-300)?

I flew them in early 1980s but cannot remember cabin design. Seems to me it wasn't that different from what came before latest canyon blue/all leather seating. However, seem to recollect that seats might have been all brown leather in very early 1980s rather than the brown leather/darker cloth combination that dominated 1984-1999 period. However, cannot confirm.

I remember them having cloth seats in the early 80's. Seems to me they had some rows red, some brown, and some blue. They were basically solid, but had a pattern of circular shapes throughout. After that I remember them getting tan headreast covers with tan cloth seat backs. The cloth part had an intricate pattern of diagonal red and brown squares.

I have a picture from 1984 when I was in a 737-200 and the seats were red and orange. Some seats faced backwards in what was called a "lounge area". The cabin was also divided by partitions into 2 or 3 sections. Hope this helps.

If I remember correctly, the current cloth seats on most of our planes still came around in 1983 or 4. Prior to that, I have not a clue what our seats looked like! Anybody with some photos?

I found a photo. I believe it was taken sometime around 1980-1981. It's not a very good picture; you can only see two rows. One row of seats is brown and the one behind it is red. They both have the same pattern though. It's basically rows of circles beside each other spaced evenly on top and to the the sides. The circles appear to be about 6 inches in diameter. Each circle is a different shade of red or brown (depending on the row). If memory serves me correctly, there were other seats that had the same pattern. Some blue, I think some yellow, and maybe some orange. Hope this helps. Sorry if I confused you.
