France Denies Mirage Parts To Taiwan For Airbus

Thu Aug 01, 2002 6:58 am

After China Airlines has bowed to Taiwan & U.S. government pressure to postpone the Airbus A330 deal, the French government has threatened to delay/cancel a renewal on fighter jet part/maintainence contract. (for the 60 Mirage 2000-5 figheer jets France sold to Taiwan's air force.

In addition, France's mission to the WTO is preparing to file WTO grivance procedures against Taiwan and the U.S.

Separately, the Taiwanese government is concerned that buying Airbus, not Boeing, will cause displeasure in Washington. This will likely disrupt the plans by the Taiwanese president to make his upcoming transit visit tot the U.S.

This kind of puts France between a rock et un hard place, non?

If CAL does get the A330s and France supplies the Mirage parts, then the mainland Chinese get upset and threaten Airbus orders. If not, France loses the Airbus order.

Gosh, this one is going to run and run and run.

Passez vous le popcorn!

Well, at least this will shut up the morons that think the US is the only party that exerts this kind of political pressure.

China Airlines simply wanted to buy a few airplanes, and look what happened, what a mess. It seems that every government and organization has something to say about this potential aircraft order.......my prediction: China Airlines will order a mix of A332s and B772s to keep everyone happy. The A332/B772 combo seems to be in style these days anyway, KLM ordered both types without political pressure.

In a previous thread, the discussion on this issue went from A vs B to Europe vs USA; my response was that when large aircraft orders are pending, politicians always get involved as it means prestige, lots of money and job potential.....well, here we have all of that and regional and international politics as well.

Perhaps Boeing could also include 60 F18 E/Fs to replace the Mirages. Just kidding, even I have to admit that it would be too cruel. Christ, what a fiasco this has turned into for Taiwan in particular. Honestly, for a country in this type of predicament, order a few short-haul 320s and the widebodies from Boeing. This way you placate the US by giving them the larger dollar order but also keep the French a little less miffed by ordering some baby busses. I know Korea has a widebody mix, but Taiwan could take note from KAL as well as Mexico (the two majors simply go either way to please everyone). Seems simple enough. Certainly having BOTH Taiwanese airlines go practically all Airbus is a little insulting given the military/trade balance issues. That's just not smart "political business".

(A) If I get my paychecks from Boeing, I would definitely do anything within my powers to persuage them to buy only Boeing products. So what, if our 777s cost 200 million dollars more than the A330s? Quality matters. Do you want to attract chicks in a Mercedes or a Toyota?

(B) If I get my paychecks from Airbus, I would definitely do anything within my powers to persuage them to buy only Airbus products. Buy the 777s if you got 200 million dollars to burn. A Mercedes may look nice, but it's not as reliable as a Toyota, is it? You may attract more chicks in a Mercedes, but it may break down in the middle of the road. A reliable Toyota will make sure you get the chick back to your home....  Big grin

It's nice to see that some airlines aren't concerned only with the rock bottom pricing game.

Nevertheless, we'll have to put up with the Euro-whiners for a while. They're all mad because the Euro is worth less than the dollar again!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy :-P  Wink/being sarcastic

Not Airbus my man, the lower the dollar goes, the more they laugh all the way to the bank. You pay your production costs in Euros and sell in USD and the choice is clear. They've benefitted enromously from this for quite a few years now and even Foregard said any significant appreciation of the Euro would be devastating as the 380 bills start coming due (assuming the bills are to be paid that is-hehe).

It looks like we have another Boeing-Airbus war going on here. In any case, I would like to see China Airlines order Boeing instead of Airbus.

Call me stupid ("okay stupid"), but isn't France shooting themselves in the foot by not providing spare parts for the fighter jets they sold to Taiwan? I mean, won't that force Taiwan to look elsewhere (ahem... hint hint) for fighter jets ?(gee, I wonder who else could provide high-tech fighter jets to Taiwan instead of France?)

Maybe I'm not "getting it" but I don't understand the French "threat" at all.

A shining example of why politics should be kept at arms length from the aviation industry. No wonder CI has safety difficulties, they try to buy from Airbus, USA throws a wobbly. They change preference to Boeing, France throws a wobbly. You can't win!

Hkgspotter1 -- You are always so bitter towards the USA. I hear Hong Kong is becoming more Democratic (giggle) under China's rule. Perhaps soon you'll get to see the benefits of the "one party one system" rule that China just LOVES. Unfortunately Taiwan doesn't want the "benefits" of being ruled by China just yet, so since they require US support, it is only natural for the US to request (and nicely, at that) that Taiwan consider US products.

And if France wants to throw a hissy, they can go do that. It won't be very effective though.

In my opinion, I think in the end the Taiwanese government will compromise--don't have much choice in this.

CI will end up ordering 12-14 A330-300's to replace their older A300B's for regional flights, and will likely order 6-8 747-400ER to fly longer transpacific routes (e.g., TPE-JFK, which I believe is within the range of the 744ER). That would essentially not change the Airbus/Boeing mix of CI's fleet.
