Best View On Air

Sun Oct 10, 1999 2:29 pm

Hi All,

What is the best view after take off/ on your way to land that you have experienced. In my opinion Phuket Airport was the best I have seen so far. With the Phang-Nga bay next to it. BTW two James Bond movies have been shot in the Phan Nga bay and it is an absolute feast for the eye.

Your comments welcome.

Well i have flown into Phuket about four times in the past. All four flights on Dragonair 737-200's (long gone). Yes the view is very nice, i took the day trip to the island where they filmed the James Bond movie.

However nothing could match a landing on RW13 at KAI TAK. This was the best landings i've ever seen.

I live in Hong Kong so i've done this landing many times. Up to the closure i flew into Hong Kong on the following.

BA 747-200 & 747-400 (including one goaround on a -400 !!!)
CX 747-200/400 L1011 and A330.
KA 737-200
PR A300, A330, 747-400, DC-10.
AF 747-200
CP 747-400
EK A310
QF 763
NW 742

My best landings were in a Emirates A310, my first cockpit landing. This was on Runway 31. I've since done cockpit landings on runway 13 in a Philippines A330-300 and a Qantas 767-300. This is Fantastic.

My only other cockpit landing was a Qantas 747-200 in Cairns, this was also fantastic as the approach was over the Great Barrier reef.

I've still yet to fly in or out of CLK.
Bush, your a sad, sad man.

I haven't flow unfortunately to Kai Tak. I must agree with you on Cairns. It is beautiful too. I have landed on many times with Qantas to Cairns; B767-300, 747-200 and 737. My best to Cairns was on an ANA 747-200 where I sat on the very first row on the nose of the 747 (two class configuration). I think it is the next best to the cockpit landing.

Have you ever landed in Sydney?. Due to the congestion in the airport, planes usually take slow approach or go around the harbour bay which is very nice too.

If you are flying into the new airport in HKG, you should have a left side window seat. If you're using 25L/R, you will have an excellent view of Kowloon (including what's left of Kai Tak - *sob*) and the island. It's still nothing compared to Kai Tak.
Approaches to the 27 runways at Heathrow on a clear day allow excellent views of central London. The same can be said of approaches to 16L/R at Sydney, allowing great views of that city.
My current favourite is flying up from Shannon to Dublin. If runway 28 is in use and it's a clear day, you have a wonderful view of Dublin Bay and the city as you bank over the bay, coming in for finals. Very ncie.

I am from Thailand , and I have flown into Phuket loadsa time and I would agree that the views were fantastic... the other view you would enjoy is Koh Samui ( USM ) on Bangkok Airways' ATR72

I've flown in and out of CLK on CX747-400 , Boeing 777-300

i think the views are okay , when you're over the bay

Flying into Oslo during autumn is really nice. The orange and green leaves and the cute buildings and streets make it very picturesque.
Also flying into Perth at 3am is quite an impressive sight. For quite a small city, there are a hell of a lot of lights on at that time.

Marsh Harbour

Mon Oct 11, 1999 12:05 pm

If you ever fly into Marsh Harbour, Bahamas, look closely before you land and you'll see SEVERAL wrecks of less fortunate aircraft lying in the mangroves below...scary!
It's very common to see wrecked drug planes all over the Bahamas, from the 80's when many smaller airstrips were used by smugglers who ditched their planes if they thought they were spotted (they'd come back later to pick up the cargo...worth a lot more than the plane!!). I've seen a couple of these (on Cat Island) with Colombian HK- registrations, lying around in swamps, beaches, or underwater. Interesting.

Also, Washington DC National is a beautiful approach if you come in from the North, you get a beautiful view of the monuments.
Male, Maldives is also great, it feels like you're about to land on a coral reef. (you are!!)
Rio is a great view, especially if you come in from the South.
