Delta Connection to Offer Nonstop Jet Service Between Columbus, Ohio And Orlando, Tampa, Fla.

ATLANTA, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delta Connection will offer customers jet service between Columbus, Ohio and the Florida cities of Orlando and Tampa beginning Nov. 1, 2002. Delta Connection carrier Chautauqua Airlines will operate three daily, nonstop round-trip flights between Columbus and both Orlando and Tampa using 50-seat Embraer regional jets (ERJ).

"Delta Connection's new service will provide customers with a convenient link between two key Florida cities and Columbus, an important business center and Ohio's capital," said Fred Buttrell, president and chief executive officer, Delta Connection, Inc.

As Delta Connection introduces the new service, Delta Express will discontinue its service from Columbus to Orlando and Tampa.

Designed for customer comfort, the ERJ features large overhead bins and one-by-two seating, with no middle seats. The ERJ is powered by Rolls Royce engines and is able to cruise at up to 37,000 feet, offering customers a smooth ride.

Delta Connection includes wholly owned subsidiaries Atlantic Southeast Airlines and Comair, additional regional carriers Atlantic Coast Airlines, Chautauqua Airlines and SkyWest Airlines, and codeshare partner American Eagle. Delta Connection carriers operate more than 250 regional jets throughout North America. For more information, please contact

I'm assuming this is part of Delta's restructuring plan to become more competitive with the nations low-fare carriers, such as jetBlue and AirTran. In conjunction with the announcement, Delta put out a press release indicating that they will expand Delta Express operations by 25% from the New York City Area. NYC is far more profitable than Columbus for Delta, and with the ever-increasing presence by jetBlue in the New York to Florida market, Delta had to step up and do something. At the same time, Delta Express has been competing with Southwest on both the MCO and TPA runs from CMH for years, and more recently, America West has come in and started service to MCO. While this move does eliminate mainline service, the switch to RJ's does give Delta the most daily nonstop flights to both Orlando and Tampa from Columbus, giving Delta an edge over Southwest and America West. It is definitely disappointing to see Delta Express go, but at least they didn't discontinue the routes altogether.

This is only the beginning, but expect some new cities as well to get added on as well (as far as n/s to MCO).

Good news, I guess, what where the hell is Miami and/or Ft. Lauderdale service? Why are carriers ignoring this market, which is the largest or second-largest O&D market from Colombus not served non-stopped (AE did very well with MIA-CMH on RJs, but they had heavy weight restrictions).

MAH4546: get a hold of yourself, man. The world isn't going to end because there isn't a city not served by MIA/FLL/PBI that's served by MCO/TPA.

BTW: In 2Q02:

MCO: 948
TPA: 837

BTW: Why do you group PBI in with MIA/FLL? Miami and West Palm Beach are 67 miles apart.

Lowfareair, I guess I overreacted, but I don't see why DL couldn't make some Connection flights work to FLL either. We'll see what happpens, because we will be seeing a lot of Delta Connection expansion in Florida this year, hopefully not all concentrated in Orlando.

As for grouping PBI, yes, PBI-MIA is 62 miles apart, but it's pretty much the same South Florida market. The same commuter rail line serves both airports, and the metro areas are on the verge of merging soon (2004 is the target gate), and the whole Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Palm Beach corridor encompasses an area smaller than Atlanta, Dallas, Washington/Baltimore, or Houston. Because of South Florida's georgraphy, we have the Atlantic to the East and Everglades to the West, so everything must be built along a compact but long corridor.
